Chillagoe, a township steeped in history, is a testament to the resilience of nature and the indomitable human spirit. Established in 1900 by hardworking miners, Chillagoe evolved into one of the largest metallurgical developments pre-World War 1. Today, relics from this bygone era still dot the landscape, serving as a reminder of its rich past. The town, which would have vanished after the closure of the smelter in 1943, survived thanks to the cattle trade and the tourism generated by its vast cave systems. With a population now around 200, Chillagoe continues to charm visitors with its unique blend of history and natural beauty. The neighbourhood is renowned for its spectacular fossil-rich limestone bluffs that have formed unusual rock towers and over 700 documented caves, the largest known system extending over 11kms. The volcanic activity and intense mineralisation have resulted in unique coloured marble and rich mineral deposits on the extremities of these bluffs.
