Chris the manager + receptionist of Chateau Backpackers & Motels is just a GREAT HOST! Efficient, kind, generous and prompt to help us with all we needed. We sincerely appreciate his promptness to send us per post on his own costs a super important object (professional working badge) we forgot in our room at the Chateau when leaving to our following accommodation in Queenstown. Definitely awesome!!! We shall certainly come back to Franz Josef when again in New Zealand and we shall reserve once more with Chateau Backpackers & Motels! The best hostel we have stayed in New Zealand. Modern, cozy, great shower pressure, spacious kitchen with dining area, there is even sauna with cold shower outside. Super friendly staff and in general nice atmosphere. We extended our stay for one more night and would definitely stay again.

A crowded and obviously popular Hostel in the heart of town ... Which turned out to be small but full of tourists... The staff at the hostel were friendly, helpful and informative... Showers were hot, Bed Comfortable and a well equipped kitchen ... Great mix of backpackers, workers and tourists were staying in this really nice Hostel

Clean hostel, comfy beds, good size rooms. Great location just a 30 min drive to fox glacier/ lake matheson and not far from Franz jospeh glacier. Nice lounge area with a pool table and a TV room.

Surprisingly good free breakfast including cereal, pancakes and toast. Other amenities too, and well set up for socialising. One of the best hostels I've stayed in.

Stunning spot, so nicely done and beautiful surroundings. Caters to all budgets! The 4 bed dorm has tea&coffee and TV and the best hostel kitchen I've ever seen! You must stay here!
