Set in Dalwhinnie, 38 km from Blair Castle, Dalwhinnie Old School Hostel offers accommodation with a garden, free private parking and a shared lounge. The property is located 18 km from Newtonmore Golf Club, 19 km from Highland Folk Museum and 22 km from Ruthven Barracks. The accommodation provides a shared kitchen and free WiFi.

We have had bad experiences before with relation to some hostels, so we were a bit nervous about staying in another, well all I can say is THIS IS NO ORDINARY HOSTEL! It is exceptionally clean, and organised. The host, (shame we disturbed his dinner with our arrival time, but he said its common occurence! haha) was wonderful and informative. He runs a brilliant establishment. The kitchen was organised and very clean, which also comes down to the other people staying there as everyone cleans up thoroughly after themselves. The same can be said for the bathrooms and toilet facilities (there are multiple of them, so no shotage/or waiting to use a bathroom), they were very clean, and all you need to tidy up after yourself is right there for you. The bedroom we stayed in was a double bed, with a single bed as well. It was spacious enough, all we needed for the 1 night stay. I am personally a 'firm mattress' sleeper, so the mattress was ok and I slept fair, but I did have to put the single bed duvet on it to cushion the springs. The bed linen was clean and smelt clean and fresh. I have recommended the hostel to every other motorcycle rider that we met along our journey through Scotland, and they will hopefully have the oportunity to stay in the gorgeous hostel. Ps: The train station is right there across the road, and I think that is just fabulous for walkers or hikers or even cyclists. Right handy!

Looking for a hostel?

Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.

The hostel is excellent value for money. The host, Lee, was very welcoming and friendly, we really sensed he cared about the hostel and his guests. He even put up a university of st andrews flag for us. The communal area is well-stocked with kitchen equipment and board games, and the living room is very cosy. The bedroom was clean and pleasant despite having 3 sets of bunk beds in a relatively small room. The location is great for hiking around Loch Ericht. We were able to drop our bags off before check in.

Friendly, helpful and pragmatic owner. Prime highland hub location either travelling by car or train. I had a private bedroom but still was able to enjoy the old skool, youth hostel vibe. Nice to sit and talk with fellow travellers in de common facilties. I was travelling through but could have spent more days here to explore the area.

Great location and brilliant for a hostel. The most comfortable hostel beds I have ever slept on. Lounge and other facilities were also great and the owner has a small shop with food if you forget to bring something to cook.
