Warm and welcoming guest houses are ideal for travellers who prefer unfussy accommodation with a personal touch. They are usually family-run, and your host will provide local recommendations and optional meals. Often cheaper than regular hotels, guest houses can also feature a cosy living room and a garden.
Niall and his family were exceptional hosts. The (vegetarian) breakfast was wonderful, the rooms were cozy and decorated with passion and the bathroom was modern, bright and clean. We felt very welcome in the Trout Fly Guesthouse and had the most wonderful and relaxed time. Our host Niall even saved our day of departure. If we have the chance, we'll be back for sure!
It is right by the ferry, and there is a great walking path to the distilleries.
There are great restaurants very nearby
There were plenty of options for breakfast, and the fresh fruit was the bonus.
Everything was exceptional clean
Our host was friendly and very helpful
Great location, in centre of Port Ellen. handy for restaurants, pubs and of course the whisky trail. Niall was an excellent host and very knowledgeable of the island. He also kept us well informed prior to our trip regarding ferry bookings etc. Breakfasts were a standout with Niall only too happy to accommodate a biggest and smallest appetites.
Our host was extremely knowledgeable and was on top of the ferry schedule changes.
The shower was excellent and the room very comfortable. Great location in Port Ellen.
Exceptional! A cozy, no-frills guest house within walking distance of three world class distilleries. Our host Niall was simply amazing. He and his family are incredibly welcoming and you almost feel like you are part of the family. They will “get you sorted” with using the local buses, where to grab a bite, who to call for a taxi and whatever else you might be wondering about. Exceptional hosts. The distilleries were great but these fine people will be what we remember most fondly about our stay on Islay.
Nigel, Moira,.Jane and the team at The Islay Hotel are truly great hosts. Professional, friendly, and over and beyond helpful. I highly recommend the daily specials at the restaurant. The freshest ingredients, beautifully prepared. A great location sitting on the beach of Port Ellen and a 20-minute stroll to Laphroaig and other distilleries nearby. Many thanks for your warm and forever memorable hospitality Ilay. I'll be back soonest.
We had a great stay at the Trout Fly Guest House when we visited Islay. The rooms are clean, breakfast was excellent, and the hosts are so helpful and kind. It was a great location to start the Three Distilleries walk from and visit Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg.
