Located in the Saint Lazare Priory of the historic Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, in the heart of the Loire Valley between Touraine and Anjou, Fontevraud L'Ermitage is a non-air-conditioned establishment that offers free WiFi and on-site parking. This was a unique experience, very special. The site is magnificent. We received a friendly welcome Good bike storage. We had a hermit's picnic, alone on a terrace at sunset.It was magical, and the food was delicious. Wandering around the empty site at night was unforgettable. Breakfast in the cloisters was wonderful.

I spent a wonderful 3 nights in this dreamy hotel/B&B/gite, literally on the banks of Le Loir. They have 3 guest rooms, each wonderfully decorated in its own historic style, from Art Nouveau to 1970s. All brand new bathrooms en suite. I think they’d term the breakfast layout as “Continental,” but it goes beyond breads and jam: beautiful local cheeses and fruits, and besides glorious artisan baguettes, croissants etc., they feature homemade items like brioche and a stellar chocolate banana bread. There’s an airy and spacious breakfast room, but anyone staying in temperate weather should take advantage of the delightful terrace, or go down the flight of stone steps to the garden— literally a couple of yards from the river, which is gorgeous. And if you like the river there, you should devote a couple of hours to wandering along it in the beautiful nature preserve which you can access within a block! The address is just on the other side of a bridge which leads into the older parts of La Flèche, a beautiful town with its origins in the Middle Ages. My reason for visiting lay in La Flèche’s role in the 17th C establishment of Montreal— I’d recently learned than a long-ago forebear was one of the 100+ young men who were recruited (La Grande Recrue) to settle in “New France” in 1653, and just wanted to wander around the place and contemplate my ancient DNA. My short stay was fascinating, and enjoyable in more ways than I’d expected.

Buffet and continental breakfast options with local specialities, fresh pastries and fruits are available daily at the bed and breakfast. A family-friendly restaurant, coffee shop and bar can be found on-site. This is a super clean comfortable family run hotel. Even though the restaurant was closed our hosts prepared an amazing meal for us because we were on bicycles and there were no other facilities open on Sunday. What an amazing gesture!
