Supposed to walk the QC track but our daughter fell ill and so we ditched the tent this section to stay here while her fever subsided the next day. It did not, so we stayed the next day, and the next day.... and eventually we had to give up walking the track at all. Spent our 4 days at Te Mahia and maybe that was a plan. It was beautifully peaceful and just a tranquil place. Accommodation is excellent, very comfortable beds, well appointed, everything you could possibly need, plenty of hot water, friendly owner, could not fault the place. Would come back with family to spend time here again. Easy to get the boat to/from Waterfall. Just an amazing view every day. Good walks up to the lookout where you can see for miles on clear days.
Hopewell Lodge is in the heart of the Kenepuru Sound and is easily accessed by water taxi from Havelock and Te Mahia Bay.

From the moment you walk into Hopewell, you get a feeling you are staying somewhere very special. After a fun and scenic little boat ride to the property (which is part of the experience of ‘leaving the world behind’), we were greeted by warm and friendly hosts and staff. We were assisted with our luggage, along a magical short / easy path through the oasis to get to our cottage. With a view to die for, our cottage was perfect in every way, clean and everything we needed (with super comfy beds!). We could tell so much care had been taken to make our stay wonderful. Do yourself a favor and order the pizzas for dinner , homemade by our hosts. They are humongous and made with delish fresh ingredients. We enjoyed them outside on a candle lit table by a toasty fire, finished off with complimentary toasted marshmallows! We changed things up to prepare our own meals on other nights which we had fun preparing in the best shared kitchen / facilities I have ever seen! There is nothing you want for.. it has everything from basic staples to sharp knives.. something you miss during travels ! (Even includes a huge, comfy living room with a toasty fireplace the staff are constantly stoking up !) We also enjoyed freshly baked homemade bread in the morning for breakfast and delicious espressos (we are from Melbourne , so takes a lot to impress us with coffee!!!). After a long journey around the South Island, we chose to take it easy at Hopewell.. easy strolls around the property to enjoy the breathtaking views, took a bike ride, played and swam in the sound shoreline with our toddler, kayaked, read a book in the hammock overlooking pristine landscape, and an evening soak in the hot tub. But you could do as little or as much as you like, with generous hosts available to help you plan activities as you desire. We found Hopewell absolutely magical, where we got lost in relaxation and making beautiful family memories together.

Such a comfortable place to stay in a spectacular location. We stayed as a group of 6, in two rooms. Everyone raved about how well they slept and how comfy the beds were and how beautiful the view from each room was.
The staff were exceptional. They went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our stay

Friendly staff
As families grow in size, so too do the needs of a family holiday. That’s why family hotels are set up to cater for all ages, from toddlers and kids to teens and adults. Typically, you can expect restaurants with kids’ menus, games rooms, fitness centres and a pool area where children can play and parents can relax.
Te Mahia staff were wonderful. Trevor and Jann are super friendly, their service is impeccable. The family room was ideal for 4 adults, with magnificent views and excellent amenities. We catered for our own breakfasts and lunches and had every dinner at "Tinker's Kitchen", every meal was delicious.
Amazing views, beautiful gardens and friendly hosts. Very family friendly, with lots of outdoor space to explore, a safe beach, fun family fishing from the jetty and glowworms for night walks. We will certainly be back!
Te Mahia has stunning views, we loved waking up to see the sea right in front of us out the window! Our room was very comfortable and well equipped. We had big deck outside with tables and sun umbrellas so we ate outside almost every meal! The staff here are always super helpful and friendly. Beautiful safe beach for swimming, kids had a ball trying to catch fish off the jetty! Will definitely be back.
Lovely place to stay, we were in a studio unit and it was a good size for the family. Comfortable beds. View over Te Mahia bay was lovely. Owners were very welcoming and accommodating, and we were able to use the kayaks provided at a reasonable cost to explore the bay a little. Food from the little food trailer was good value for money although had to be ordered well in advance, which wasn't an issue. All the staff were pleasant to deal with and the place has a nice family atmosphere to it.
