Amazing place. We went in July, which was offseason for the area but would totally recommend both the town and this ryokan.
Service and food were outstanding - the kaiseki dinner was our favourite meal in Japan. Shibu is an onsen town so there are lots of public baths. Fun to visit, but the onsen at Sakaeya was better - beautiful and even featured an outdoor pool. The ryokan is close to the snow monkey park which was a real highlight even in July. Add this place to your Japan itinerary!

The room was excellent, authentic, very clean and comfortable. Cotton kimono were provided for after Onsen, one of the onsen was outdoors in the garden. The gardens were amazing, beautifully curated with mature trees, shrubs and Koi Carp. Our host was very kind and helpful, she gave us a lift from the station with our bags and also gave us a lift to the monkey park. She also very kindly lend us some suitable footwear as the monkey park was icy and a little muddy. This has been my favourite place to visit in japan so far. We also had the breakfast and dinner provided both were exceptional and a beautiful experience.
