Pleasant accommodation near the station. The owner insisted on transporting us because it was raining, he also arranged a reservation for us at the camp. He also provided plenty of information for restaurants and grocery stores in the area.
Great place to start for Kumano Kodo with lots of useful information.
Thank you very much.

We had such an amazing stay at Kirinosato Takahara. A magical location high up in the mountains only metres from the Kumono Kudo trail . Jian and his wife and staff were awesome . So friendly and accommodating. The food was the best we’ve had in Japan . All organic and home made . I’m pescatarian and they catered for my dietary needs . The home made warm bread for breakfast with home made plum jam was to die for as was the banana bread . They also prepared a bento box for our trek that day
The beds were very comfortable and the onsen was clean and had everything we needed
Will definitely return !!

If you are an avid adventurer and nature lover, this place has it all. At night, wildlife comes into the room to draw blood. You can see it on the wall! At the time of check in, there were 9 other guests so there is always a scramble for the privately-shared shower room of one. There is 4 rooms on the first floor and 3 rooms on the second floor. The first floor rooms have good privacy allowing guests to peek into your room if your door is left ajar as it's along the main hallway from the main entrance. Imagine how peacefully you can sleep!
Set within 10 km of Kamitonda Concert Hall and 11 km of Kozan-ji Temple, Kumano Winery Guest House provides rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Tanabe.

The staff/owners were great. The food was delicious. The setting/surroundings were enjoyable (secluded & quiet with great views). The property is quite and a little on the basic side but that's part of the experience.

Staff was able to provide information clearly and was fluent in English. He was also very kind to pick us up from the train station for free. He also provided suggestions for sight seeing and restaurants. Highly recommend the accommodation due to the service and facilities.

Tanabe was our starting point for our Kumano Kodo trek so we stayed in Tanabe only one day not realizing how much there is to do in Tanabe. If we ever come to Tanabe again, we will be sure to stay longer to enjoy all that there is to do there. I think we could have stayed a whole week if we weren't going on our trek.

Having visited Japan so many times, this trip was probably the best of all. I followed the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage and experienced both the people, the culture and the religion of ancient Japan. I spent in total about 4 days walking and all of the accommodations (family run b&b and a hot spring hotel) was all very clean, with tasty food and friendly people. I'd love to go back again and experience the other less famous trails of the same region.
These two great hosts built the coziest, most beautiful and comfortable cute place which feels like home in heaven thanks to their great hospitality also. It’s super clean and everything for your comfort is well taken care of with an excellent eye for the details. Add to this the most delicious and special fresh cooked French/Japanese cuisine delicacies and you would not want to leave just like we didn’t. It’s also so conveniently located right in the middle of the Kumano Kodo trail! Definitely want to go back!:)
I came late with the train from Osaka and the lovely host Juan met me at the station and escorted me to the hotel (which is right by the station). Nice, clean room. I was going on the Kumano Kodo the next day and the hostel is right by the busstop and touristinformation. I highly recommend this place, it had a charming feel to it.
Great value! The house is so large and well facilitated it can probably easily host 10 people but is still reasonably priced for just two people. They provided so much food and drink. All freshly sourced from local regions. Everything was so tasty! One of the best stays during our three-week vacation in Japan.
Lovely to stay and enjoy the delicious food and tranquility. I only wish we had stayed longer. Very interesting to hear Giovanni's story of developing the accommodation and preserving Japanese culture in Wakayama. Comfortable bed and space. We were nice and warm despite the freezing temperatures outside!
Great location if hiking the Kumano Kodo. About 7 minutes walk through town from the trail. Grocery store across the street. Offers a dinner/breakfast/bento lunch option. Very clean. shower water pressure was amazing. beds were comfortable.A perfect spot to rest and refresh after a long days hike.
This hostel is just 5 minutes away from the koi-Tanabe station. The house is typical Japanese traditional house which reminds me of my grandma’s house. It was very comfortable and relaxing to stay there. The owner was very helpful and friendly. I loved the interior design of this house.
The host is very kind and picked us up from Kii Tanabe and dropped us off at the start of the Kumano Kodo trail. The house itself is also beautiful, clean and well taken care of. The value for money is really excellent. The host really puts in proper love and effort!
Super nice place, I loved it. You can easily start the Kumano Kodo from there. The owner is a great guy. He offered to pick me up from Tanabe station and gave me a ride to a supermarket so I could get vegan food. Thanks again! 🙏
I would def stay there again.
Mr Hiroki and his wife are so warm and welcoming. They kept in close contact with me upon arrival at Tanabe and when came to pick me up to their guest house. Naoko puts her heart into preparing all the meals and its so delicious!
- Friendly and welcoming staff
- Basic tolietries provided
- Room has its own AC/Heat unit I can control
- Breakfast of their delicious chiffon cake (so good!)
- Futon bedding was comfy
- Easy 10 minute walk from Kii-Tanabe
Very kind host, we had some nice talk with host about Japan. He cooked us really delicious okonomiyaki. It was nice diner and breakfast with other guests. We tried sake. Everything you want after long Kumano Kodo walk! 😊
The host gave suggestions for my Kumano Kodo. The place is clean and has everything you need prior to the Kumaano Kodo walk. The host is prompt in answering all the questions. I highly recommend this place in Kii Tanabe.
Fabulous dinner, I left before breakfast, but the lunch box they provided was excellent to fuel me as I walked the Kumano Kodo. Spectacular location and views. Can’t recommend it enough!!!
Nice and clean private room, good showers and a friendly and helpful host! Very close to the bus station from where you want to start your kumano kodo hike.
