This multi-coloured and complex African metropolis is the biggest city in South Africa and probably the living example of its much debated history. Johannesburg is not the capital of the country, but it represents its main economic hub, and is also the seat of the Constitutional Court.
Popularly known as Jo’burg, the city is constantly under renovation in all areas, allowing it to slowly but decidedly overcome its ‘Apartheid’ legacy. The Central Business District (CBD) alternates historic buildings with skyscrapers and a lively nightlife. Suburbs like Melville, Newtown or Rosebank have a bohemian atmosphere. With some of the best Johannesburg hotels, Sandton City and Hyde Park are modern residential and shopping areas.
Get to know South Africa’s history at Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum, and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Natural areas like the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Cradle of Humankind’, the Lion Park Nature Reserve, or the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve are located outside the city.
OR Tambo International Airport is the largest airport in Africa, while the smaller Lanseria Airport offers connections to mainly domestic destinations. Hotels near Johannesburg’s airport are a popular choice to avoid the last-minute rush. Check out the wide range of Johannesburg accommodation deals available on Booking.com.

Joburg is "interesting" to see it but you never feel safe mainly because everyone tells you you are not safe.
The really interesting part is visiting Soweto with a local guide - this is something that helps you understand why Joburg is what it is right now.
We have seen the superrich white people´s areas with their homes that cost millions and we have visited the illegal housing barracks in Soweto near the Soweto soccer stadium. Joburg has it all - but it does not merge in a good way. Definitely not a place I would like to live in.
As a white person you leave a bit ashamed and in deep thoughts.

Two things are equally true: I love this city; it's a hard place to love. And it's become harder to love since I lived there 20 years ago, with things like consistent water and electricity no longer taken for granted. Driving there is a special kind of adrenaline rush (especially downtown), crime remains endemic, and the city is just crumbling. But it's also an incredibly friendly, diverse, culturally vibrant place. I go to Cape Town for beautiful views of the mountains and the sea; I go to Johannesburg to see old and dear friends and make new ones.
The breakfast was plentiful and delicious including a basket of fresh baked goods. The breakfast room was lovely with linens and fresh flowers on the table. The beds were comfortable with luxury linens. The staff was delightful, ready to help us in any way they could including a driver who picked us up from the airport and would take us anywhere within a certain distance of the hotel. I left a converter/adapter in my room and came back through Joburg 2 weeks later and they had it for me. Really attentive and gracious staff.
This hotel is one of the best we have stayed at so far. It effortlessly exceeds the last two 5 star hotels we stayed at, which was really a pleasant surprise. The location is excellent - in the middle of the city but with peace and quiet that we haven't experienced except at places rather far from the city. The suite was excellent - roomy and very well appointed. This is one of the few places where the bathroom was spotless when we arrived.
We intend coming back here as we really enjoyed it.
This was the best possible start of my stay in South Africa! The Guesthouse is very comfortable, situated in a peaceful garden and located in a safe neighborhood. Also great that they have good gas heating and reliable electricity in the room. But the real gem is the owner, Conway, who was extremely helpful and friendly throughout and gave me so many good tips and insights into life in Johannesburg. I could not have wished for a better start in South Africa.
Location is superb for visitors. The Sandton mall/Mandela square is only a mile away and the hotel runs shuttles at 15 min intervals to ensure safety of guests. The hotel interiors are a little dated but I didn't find it to be a problem. It lives by the standards of what you'd expect from a 5 star hotel. And it is the best value for money, by far. The breakfast was excellent too
I loved everything about the Fairway Hotel and spar. The room was neat, I had my room decorated for my boyfriend's birthday, the hotel went all out to decorate the room with roses etc, it was the most beautiful thing I have ever set my eyes on. The breakfast was the best, everything about this hotel was 5 star. I recommend this hotel for everyone wishing to come to jhb👌
The overall furnishing of the hotel, the Spa and the friendliness of the staff were amazing! Please keep up the good work! Unfortunately, I've seen hotels going down in quality in South Africa as they haven't maintained their amenities. So please keep an eye on that - I'd also love to come back in the future ;-)
Nice hotel in the Rosebank area of Johannesburg. Very modern with nice facilities. The staff were absolutely amazing and accommodating. They were willing to help address any questions/concerns. Felt very safe with a 24hr security guard. Great value for money. Would highly recommend this establishment.
The room was beyond my expectation in terms of the size, cleanness, facilities. the room service was very good and fast. could not feel of load-shedding, which is a big issue in South Africa. The location of the Hotel is excellent. The staff were very charming and helpful.
The service was great with plenty of staff present. The breakfast selections were the best I have encountered during my visit to South Africa. The hotel room was large and well appointed design. Loved the mix of modern with traditional colors and themes.
The hotel is central. While not suitable for walking, it is a short distance to great restaurants, highways, the airport etc. The gardens and pool are beautiful, this place is really good value for the Johannesburg area.
The hotel is extravagant for South African standards, but rather mediocre compared to other places I’ve seen around the world. Mainly because of the staff. They definitely needs better training and leadership!
Teboho the Receptionist was absolutely fantastic and was extremely helpful and friendly, a passionate hotelier with a small hotel like this can compete with the 5 star hotels anywhere in South Africa
Excellent service and beautiful hotel. The team is really helpfull and the place is truly beautiful and calm. Will be my first choice on my next trip to Johannesburg
he plate is delicious!
The hotel location is great with a lot of malls in the surroundings and near to M1 road that takes you were you want in Johannesburg. Staff were very friendly and always willing to help.
I love this hotel for its easy access to everything around Sandton CBD. The staff are amazing. I enjoyed the breakfast. I love that check out is at 12pm. I also love their pool.
