After spending 17 days in Bangkok, Chiang Rai was a nice break for 3 days. Quiet, slower pace of life. Lovely night bazaar with lots of food options (love the hot pot) and live music. Wat Rong Khun white temple, Wat Rong Seur blue temple and Wat Huay Pla Kang big Buddha are worth seeing. Khun Korn NationalPark is worth the hike up to the waterfall - bamboo jungle and cold refreshing swim. We were here in mid-March so farmers are burning and very hazy up north so did not go to the golden triangle.

If Chiang Mai is the "jewel of the north" then Chiang Rai is the "Emerald of the True North".
Chiang Rai history dates back beyond Chiang Mai and was the original Lanna city state founded by King Mengrai in the mid 1200s AD. This king of times long past is still revered and remembered to this day by Lanna people.
Chiang Rai has history coming out of its cobblestones and weblike laneways. I won't try to list them here because they are easy to find in many other reviews and info sheets. What I can do here is just to raise interest in one of the most understated jewels of Thailand.
Chiang Rai is the central hub of Lanna culture today. And the Lanna language is still spoken commonly all around Chiang Rai province. In many homes it's the preferred language until kids start going to school and so can be heard all over the place. I've often heard conversations where people interchange Lanna with Thai ... very confusing. The temples and shrines of Chiang Rai province are just as spectacular and just as mystical as any elsewhere in Thailand. And the history of the Lanna people is integrally intertwined in all the older temples, chedis, stupas, salas and other public places.
Chiang Rai province is renowned for its coffee at Doi Chang and other places. It's also one of the major tea growing areas of Asia. Mountainous landscapes eclipse anything that can be seen further south and the weather is always a bit cooler and fresher air than further south also. A short drive north can take you up to the Myanmar border at Mai Sai and you can even go visit the Mekong River in all its glory.
If you plan to visit Northern Thailand and only go as far as Chiang Mai then you are missing out BIGTIME!!!
So I suggest you 'do yourself a favour' and make plans to explore Chiang Rai and all its provincial eye-catching destinations soon. Happy Travels.

Others can talk about the White Temple, Blue Temple etc etc I simply want to say that Chiang Rai offers a hugely different perspective to that of any other Thailand city ... and it's MORE than worth your while to visit. The surrounding mountains and various attractions there are multitudinous. The temples are just as impressive (for Buddhists and non-Buddhist alike) as in Chiang Mai and in fact Chiang Rai predates Chiang Mai as the famous King Mengai's capital city for his Lanna Kingdom.
The Lanna culture is unique in all of Southeast Asia and Chiang Rai is really still the epicentre of Lanna and all its aspects. If you are looking for a truly cultural and spectacular holiday experience then Chiang Rai is one place that YOU SHOULD NOT MISS.
So do yourself a favour and get yourself up to Chiang Rai ... in the Lanna lands of clouds and smiles!

Visited the Balloon Fiesta in Singha Park.
Visited the Balloon Fiesta in Singha Park. Plenty to see and do, we'll probably do it again next year.
I was lucky enough to visit the White Temple during Covid, and although it wasn't possible to go inside it was lovely to be able to see it without the crowds. Having just driven past this time I wasn't sure it would be worth the wait in the queue to go inside.

Chiang Rai is a nice place with friendly people, which can meet the needs/expectations of different people with varied tastes. It is not very touristy, so much more natural. Rent a car and it is easy to get about with Google Maps. Enjoy the natural environment, the food and fruits, and various attractions.
This hotel was literally an oasis in the city. I can’t even explain it. The tons and tons of trees and flowers that surround the rooms and all in the middle of the city! Incredible. A shout out to Eddie , a tour guide who is affiliated with the hotel. Ask for him at the front desk. He took us around on a private tour of the highlights of Chiang Rai and then drove us to Chiang Mai. I can’t say enough about how he made our visit enjoyable and easy. His English was pretty good too!
It’s an older backpack hotel with a great vibe. The very clean swimming pool is a big plus especially after my long bicycle ride. The staff speaks English well, the food is good (and not expensive—they don’t try to rib you off like some hotels do, and a friendly group of travelers stayed there. It’s a great place to hangout for a few days. The staff can help with information about the city and sightseeing. Overall it is an excellent choice and much cheaper than I expected.
location could not be better - close to the attractions on city center, walking distance to restaurants and the night market, etc
swimming pool is nice
breakfast, compared to other hotels in Thailand we've been, was good
rooms are comfy (we had some noise on the first night and they changed for us)
restaurant is good and convenient
Really cosy place to stay with a decent sized room. Bathroom was well equipped too. Bed was comfy and big. Free bikes to get around town were a really nice touch, as was the complimentary breakfast. The staff at the hotel were very accommodating, letting us check out before the regular check in time due to our early transport.
Great location easy walking distance from town. Had a nice long conversation with Tony, the son who is helping to run the family business - his life is so interesting. Feel like I could have spent more time in Chiang Rai because of this place. Breakfast was lovely. Rooms were basic but good (and exceptional for the price).
The hotel is located at a short distance from all the important tourist spots. The staff are very helpful with your requests and the service was great. A recommendation is always to ask the hotel staff for transportation and not go out and get a taxi by yourself. A great place to stay in Chiang Rai
Hotel is new and well kept. The room we booked is spacious and clean. The view of the farm around the property gives serene atmosphere. There is a corner of instant noodle/fruits/bread/water provided for guests (free of charge). It's located just 2 minutes from the famous white temple.
Very nice stylish hotel. Definitely, it is not for people who like big network hotels. It's made in old style but with all modern facilities. A good breakfast is included. The hotel is situated not far from the center but away from city noise. The staff is very helpful. WIFE is good.
We booked this place for 3 nights to travel around Chiang Rai's beautiful scenery. Hotel is at a perfect location just outside the heart of the city with quiet surroundings.
You'll feel like being on a tropical island.
The location was really nice because you could walk to the Blue Temple. The hotel could benefit from a bit of renovations but it is still a nice hotel to stay in Chiang Rai. The food of the hotel restaurant was AMAZING
Beautiful property with good value. The owners were very helpful at check in. Brand new property that is super clean and meticulous. One of the better stays in Chiang Rai! They have parking for the bike or a car.
The reception was great. I felt welcomed and the reception made sure to give me maps and recommendation of the area. This is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in chiang Rai.
A luxury hotel with all the facilities, with car or motorbike you can go anywhere, walking maximum you can go until the mall and some bars around the hotel
