It is a small town. We rented a car and drove to Phuket (2.5hrs away) and the next day drove to Krabi (2.5 hrs away). Roads are windy so I recommend only skillful or experienced drivers to be behind the wheel. 7-11 is a blessing in KL. Their cheesy toast and chicken burger are really value for money.
There is nothing much to see in KL per say except for the beach and the tsunami museum. Water activities are in abundance though.

Khao Lak is the area for people who are after chill vibe on beautiful beaches! During the season there are very unique trips to beautiful areas like the Similian Islands, Surin, khao Sok is very close so it's perfectly located. You can find very luxurious hotels, and budget ones, the beaches are amazing and as i said- the feeling of havong a lot of space in general is still here... vs. areas like Phuket...

We stayed at the beginning of low season, so things seemed to be winding down a bit. It's an area that is thankfully much quieter and less visited by the newer kind of tourist now common elsewhere. Go there before it becomes over developed with boring and expensive resorts.

Highlights were the beautiful beaches nearby especially white sands beach as well as the great shopping everywhere. But best of all was the trip to Similian islands where I swam with a turtle. Please also visit the wonderful turtle sanctuary I was allowed to release one into the wild!

Khao Lak is certainly less bussier than Phuket but nevertheless we stayed at the Mukdara Beach Hotel where there were many many restaurants, bars, night markets, shops, massage places and tourist offices around.
If you look for a nice quiet beach but with some action and fun around, Khao Lak is certainly a place to go.
We went there in March and did not have any jelly fishes, whereas in Ao Nang, Island hopping tours there, Phuket there were jelly fishes as it was the season in March
The hotel manager and the whole staff is extremely friendly and warmhearted. We got excellent advice for tours, restaurants and activities.
The Hotel itself is a class of its own: perfectly organized, clean, outstanding breakfast, lovely design and interior. And it's still small enough, that you feel special and connected to the country you spend your holidays in. 🙂
It's definitely a premium choice, when you go to Khao Lak. I highly recommend it.
Good price for small bungalows in a proper locations in Khao Lak. Bungalows are small but have all the basic necessities you need, and seeing how it's rather cheap per night you couldný really ask for more. The pool was better than expected, great for some cooling down at the end of the day. Quiet on a side street but with a few mins walking you had multiple shops, and 10 mins more to the beach and other restaurants/hotels
Beautiful location on the beach with the forest as a backdrop. We loved the amazing pools throughout the resort (some were really quiet). What makes this resort unique is that no old trees were cut down to build it. Hence, you have the impression you are staying in a nature park. The hotel deserves a high score on environmental standards. The buffet was outstanding and beautifully decorated. Kudos to the chef!
the hotel is centrally located in Khao Lak with lots of restaurants, bars and much more, only 800 m from the most beautiful beach. The staff are nice and helpful, everything is neat and the cleaners are very good in the rooms. outdoors there is a swimming pool with deckchairs and garden furniture, everything is neat and clean. a great hotel if you have a few days in Khao Lak.
The food that I had at the hotel was very good, staff were very helpful however had trouble with the first room that I had and was reloacted. Issues with the lack of hot water and the power point behind the bed was faulty.
This resort is in a great location because it is a 5 minute walk and you have a number of restuarant options.
This is a great hotel/guesthouse. The rooms are a good size, the bed was so comfortable, strong wifi, friendly staff, great location, very quiet, large balcony that looks onto the forest and a decent bathroom. For the money you pay, this place is a bargain. I will definitely be staying here again when I return to Khao Lak.
The hotel is located on the river and on the beach, so you can enjoy them both
Free kayaks to take to the river
Great beach. Nice beach masaage
Rooms were very spacious and clean. Had all you need. Nice side view to the river.
Great and huge selection at breakfast.
Nice pools, with two fun slides for the kids
We loved our 1 night at The retreat
It’s cosy and personal, the staff couldn’t do more for us
We were picked up from the airport and Mr Op was so accomodating to all of our needs
Unfortunately we had to leave to meet friends for our next nights in Khao Lak but Mr Op was happy to drive us to our next hotel
It was such a pleasure staying at Nautical. Nat & Visa are wonderful and generous hosts. Spent the first night alone, and felt so safe and comfy. Khao Lak is a lovely area with super friendly locals, great restaurants bars and salons! A short 10 min walk to Bang Niang Beach. Would def come back!
Everything, I met my friend Cristina we both travel around Thailand and we met after a long time in this hotel.
The hotel has great staff and beautiful beach-free space no other hotel around.
We stayed inside the hotel because of the rain but enjoyed it because the staff was super friendly.
Great family hotel! The people who work here are amazing! The place is very beautiful, you wake up to the singing of birds! We rented a bike at the hotel at a great price! Convenient location! breakfasts are very tasty! Khao Lak is incredibly beautiful. I recommend to everyone
Very friendly hotel, excellent service, central to shops and restaurants, lovely tropical garden, breakfast adequate to good, good kick-off point for the rest of Khao Lak, scooter recommended and cheap to rent (no traffic to speak of), good security concept
Very nice, beachfront location of the hotel. Great facilities which give you lots of options how to spend your day between the pools or chill out on the beach.
Delicious breakfast with big variety of choices. Really relaxing stay for the families.
Kai is wonderful, the friendliest lady. She takes such good care of the guests and makes you feel at home. The location is central and although Khao Lak is quiet, this hotel is still in a busier part. I can happily recommend this place to anyone.
Location was excellent, on the beach and a short walk to town centre where there were restaurants and convenience stores.
Hotel was well managed , staff were welcoming and helpful, and the rooms were beautiful , airy and clean
The staff was amazing. Super friendly and helpful. The facilities where beyond our expectations. The room was stunning and very roomy. Grandfather Resort is this hidden gem tucked away in a perfect little hillside in khao lak.
Excellent boutique hotel tucked behind main street of Khao Lak. Quiet overnight stay in close proximity to plenty of choice for restaurants / massage etc. Staff are lovely and helpful. Clean, modern & comfortable space.
