We travelled to Assen to attend an important art exhibition at the Drents. We had no other itinerary, other than to see the exhibition, and leave. What a pleasant surprise! Friendly, engaging locals, and a pretty little town that is really easy to get around. We stayed the night, and were happy we did. An unforeseen highlight of our visit to Holland.

Assen is a beautiful city, and is perfect for a visit, We go every year for the BSB races, we always come away feeling like we want to stay longer, locals are so friendly, the streets are clean, I always visit Deer Park a lovely park with friendly Red Deer who will happily take carrots off passing visitors.
Take the walk or cycle through Asserbos a wood full of paths and trees with bird houses on them the Dutch care.
Eating out is full of choices, various restaurants are located in the square.
The station is in the centre so go to Gronigen a city of diversity and students, the museum is worth a visit, marvel at the Martino Tower and walk up to the top for a view of Gronigen. Train takes 17 minutes. Two hours away is Amsterdam and trains are comfy, regular (even on Sunday) so no excuses.

There are lots of places to eat and drink in Assen but the town is incredibly quiet at night with no one walking about. This gives a bit of a dead atmosphere in my opinion. Not the place to go if you want to party. Fortunately, for me anyway, this meant quiet nights with plenty of sleep.

Clean, friendly and vibrant town, plenty of food options, reasonable pricing, keep your eyes peeled for cyclists, they appear from nowhere! Transport good, trains, buses and taxis all at the same location, bikes for hire to enable you to become one of the traveling masses!
Best possible access to the TT Circuit.
If you get tired and need rest, you can just leave the circuit and walk to the tent.
I liked the kitchen cars for dinner and morning coffee.
I didn't try, but there a sauna and a barber.
We were in Assen for a 5 day cycling event. The apartment was the perfect location and our hosts were very welcoming and their provision for our bike related needs was most appreciated.
