Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa, hotel in Gaya Island

Located off the coast of Borneo on Gaya Island, Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa features spacious villas with a private balcony. The resort boasts an outdoor pool and 3 dining options.

The resort is accessed by boat and is completely secluded. From the sea, the resort is virtually invisible, as it has been carefully designed to melt into the rainforest background. The individual rooms are beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable. The beach is clean, despite the constant barrage of plastic pollution from the sea. The main reef is fairly bland but seemed reasonably healthy, with a good variety of sealife. It is closed at low tides for the safety of guests and preservation of the reef environment, so be sure to check with the staff. There is a smaller reef on the other side of the bay that can still be accessed at low tide. It's not as impressive, but we actually saw a lot of interesting fish there. Top tip, If you can drag yourself out bed at around 6am, there is a good chance of seeing small reef sharks in the shallow waters around the pier. It's also worth a walk down the pier at night for a chance to spot interesting sealife. The pool area seemed popular with guests and there always seemed to be a few sun beds free. The food was great and the service was friendly and efficient. In fact, the staff in general were wonderful and made us feel very welcome and special. They are an absolute credit to the establishment! The only slight issue we had was that our family villa was way up a long, steep hill. Lifts are available, on request, in little golf buggies but it wasn't easy to just pop back on foot whenever we wanted, particularly in the heat of the day. However, we had complete privacy and our balcony looked out onto stunning rainforest, so we were very happy. All in all, we absolutely loved this resort and wish we could have stayed longer. It's not a cheap option but it's definitely worth it. Complete luxury, I highly recommend it!

Gaya Island Resort - Small Luxury Hotels of the World, hotel in Gaya Island

Set within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park off the coast of Borneo, Gaya Island offers elegant villas with panoramic views of the South China Sea and the rainforest.

The villas were outstanding—spacious, clean, and beautifully nestled within the rainforest. While some rooms, like ours, offered stunning views, others may not have the same outlook. The scenery felt like something straight out of a movie. The island is covered in dense rainforest, teeming with wildlife; we had frequent visits from monkeys, birds, and even monitor lizards. The beaches are equally impressive, and we highly recommend spending time at Tavajun Beach. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating, always going out of their way to meet our needs. For activities, the snorkeling on the nearby smaller island is a must-do. We were lucky enough to see blacktip reef sharks, stingrays, moray eels, squid, pufferfish, and many other fascinating marine creatures. The mangrove kayaking was another highlight—just don’t forget your mosquito spray! Lastly, the jungle tours, particularly the night walk, were a thrilling experience. There’s a good chance to spot pythons, vipers, cobras, and various other tropical wildlife such as monkeys and monitor lizards.

An amazing location - wonderful views over the bay from our very nice room. We loved seeing the monkeys, hornbills, monitor lizards and geckos. The staff were helpful and friendly. We enjoyed spending time at the simple private beach a short boat ride away. Make sure you arrive at Jesselton Point at least an hour before your speedboat leaves as they check you in there and it can take ages. Evening dining is either a fish restaurant, a Japanese restaurant or a bewilderingly large buffet.

The staff are exceptional. The variety of food is amazing. Facilities were in good condition and easily accessible. I expected we may be able to hike a few trails on the island but this was not possible. It surprised me for such a relaxed place that you needed more formal attire (trousers, closed shoes and collared shirt for) for one of the restaurants. We weren’t prepared for that. Sunset cruise was brief but great

We had an incredible stay here.

We had an incredible stay here. The island team go to great lengths to make sure their guests are well looked after. At dinner the chef came out to say hello and wish us a happy anniversary! Wow! Our room - should I say house? - was amazing. Beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, turn down service at night, great food, gorgeous settings and the nicest staff team ever. Highly recommended!

Staff we're amazing, treated you like a celebrity and made you feel very special at every opportunity. Was treated to an anniversary cake and we had really attentive service. The island itself is stunning, and the activities on offer are amazing. Would love love to come back. Clara was our lead host, and she was lovely and sweet.

The location is amazing, the staff is very friendly and the spa treatments are really good. But that’s about it, the rest is a disaster, incredibly expensive and NOT a 5-star hotel. I went there to relax for a few days, it was impossible to relax anywhere.
