A traditional onsen ryokan in a quaint mountain village. Our room was lovely and much larger than expected. The kotatsu was a great addition and we used it often. We had a room with a private bath, definitely worth the extra cost. The food was the best meal I had the entire trip, I was so full by the end I could barely get back to my room. The staff were so kind and one person even spoke excellent English. My only regret was that we didn’t stay longer
As one of the oldest ryokan in the Dorogawa hot-spring area, Hanaya Tokubei has a history of over 500 years.

We wanted to get away from the noise of the big city for a few days. We found the peace and quiet we were looking for at Akemi and her husband's beautiful guesthouse. They were very welcoming and attentive.
We always looked forward to having breakfast and dinner together. The exchange with the other guests was always very interesting and Akemi is a great cook. It was always delicious. Food preferences or other diets were always taken into consideration.
We were given a short guided tour to various shrines near Hashimoto. This was very nice and we were happy not to be surrounded by other tourists for once.
We had three great days at the inn. We would visit again any time!

The owner and staff are very kind and caring. The woman who serves the meals was great and took time to help us understand what all the varieties of food were. It is a great traditional japanese inn experience with a nice onsen and good quality meals. The location has great views as well, it would be excellent during cherry blossom season.

Dorogawa is a charming little town in the Tenkawa region which has plenty to offer visitors: astonishing walks up the waterfalls in the Mitrai Valley; the Benzaiten shrine and local coffee house in Tenkawa village; Ryusenji Temple, caves and Mt Omine directly accessible by foot from Dorogawa. A very different experience to city hopping in Japan and worth the effort to get there!
