The on suite onsen was amazing! We really enjoyed the time there
The staffs were amazing too, always bowing and greeting when we arrive at the hotel
In particular (did not take note of his name), there was one staffs who went the extra mile to help us set up the futon after we called for help in the middle of the night 😰 We were very thankful!

This was a lovely town to visit! It's closer to Sapporo than I realized, so the train ride from there was very quick. We went to a few historical sites, the aquarium, shrines, and shopping. There was a lot of great food around the shopping and we picked up things as we went. Our best meal was the ramen and gyoza at Ramen Tokaiya! A small ramen shop with one guy manning the whole place. We made sure to go a little early so there was very little wait.

I really liked Otaru, even though it is small and doesn’t have too much to see. It’s really just the main shopping strip and the canal. There are a few museums and some spots in the mountains (there seems to be a ropeway that is poorly advertised but would have been perfect) but that’s about it.
It’s really quite a charming place. The streetscape and history are both fascinating, and the food great - especially ankake yakisoba and kaisendon. I do think it would be an absolutely perfect place to end a trip and unwind for a few days before returning to reality.

A lovely old port town with many original buildings being repurposed for tourism - dining and glass making.
Compact size makes walking around easy but in winter could be snow bound.
Lots of great places to explore old Japanese culture and dining and drinking experiences.
Lots of fresh seafood...many diners around the actual fish market shop with all types of Japanese cuisine... tempura...sakitori...sushi..shashimi...hotpot ...ramen etc..and absolutely amazing bakeries / patisseries and local ice cream and dairy products. Even wineries have opened up.
And even more if you are a winter sports person with ski resorts on the town outskirts...seaon just closed when we were here.
All this a simple train ride from Sapporo Airport -- ok maybe an 2 hour ride...not bad if straight off the plane from Sydney or Seoul or Tokyo into the Sapporo airport.

After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

We went during winter.
We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).
Been to Otaru for 3 times on day trip. But staying there for the first time. So happy i went with this hotel.
1 to 2 min walk from Otaru JR station. Top location, nearest to the station as compared to the rest. Superb onsen and provide free fruit and hershey chocolate popsicles after soaking in the onsen.
The bed is comfy and room is clean. Top-notch experience. Short walk to Otaru morning market and Naruto Fried Chicken main branch.
I loved the coziness of this place. There's a cute little beer tap room out front and you get a free welcome drink during your stay that you can redeem for a drink at the beer room. There's everything you need for a stay in Otaru here. Laundry, kitchen, hang out area. Location is great. About a 15 minute walk to the train station. A couple of minutes walk to the canal and about a 5-10 minute walk to get to the touristy heart of Otaru.
The location was excellent! Walking distance to train station and direct connection to two shopping areas. The hotel is not in the middle of Otaru town so don’t expect to walk out the door and have access to the attractions. Nevertheless, it was not an issue to take a short train ride to Otaru station.
Hotel is on a grand scale with large rooms and a huge dining area. The staff was very helpful with a few English speakers.
The hotel’s European historical-style furnishing integrates it well into Otaru’s canals and historical trading facilities.
Central location. Directly beside the canal and within walking distance to most museums, galleries and handicraft shops.
I highly encourage all visitors to have at least one breakfast at the hotel. Good ambiance and good food.
The room was comfortable, quiet, clean, and large by Japanese standards. The furnishings were like new, with super comfortable beds. The hotel is a 15-minute walk from the train station and within easy walking distance of a lot of Otaru's tourist attractions. Friendly staff make this a hotel worth returning to.
Perfect location in front of the railway station: Otaru is so small that you can get there by train in the morning, drop your luggage in the hotel, visit the city (canals are overrated, but Mt. Tengu is underrated), and come back in time to put on your yukata and go for an onsen first, and then free noodles.
Overall very clean and comfortable hotel! Large rooms especially for Japanese standards. Bathroom was large and clean as well. Great property right downtown.
