Great to stay in an authentic “Edo period’ house in a smaller town off the tourist track. Glad downstairs room was air conditioned - otherwise would have been an uncomfortable stay. Bathroom, toilet and laundry facilities great.

Magome Chaya, hotel in Okuwa

Just 40 metres from restored Edo-era post town Magome-Juku, Chaya Hotel has simple traditional rooms with futon bedding and a tatami-mat floor.

Great location right on the Nakasendo way walk - we enjoyed sitting out the front having a drink, soaking in the amazing vista and atmosphere of Magome after our day of walking. Dinner and breakfast were delicious.

馬籠ふるさと学校 Magome Furusato Gakkou, hotel in Okuwa

Featuring mountain views and a garden, 馬籠ふるさと学校 Magome Furusato Gakkou offers accommodation attractively situated in Nakatsugawa, within a short distance of Toson Memorial Museum, Magome Wakihonjin...

Staff were flexible and they went above and beyond to help, which we really appreciated. The facility was very clean, including the shared spaces. There was a large, well-equipped kitchen and food and drink to purchase. The beds were comfortable and we appreciated the small lockboxes in the bunk bed cubbies. The town is only a 10-minute walk away. Overall, it’s a good place to stay if you’re walking the Nakasendo.

Takimi Onsen Inn that only accepts one group per day, hotel in Okuwa

Takimi Onsen Inn that only accepts one group per day features a hot spring bath and free private parking, and is within 9.1 km of Otsumago and 9.3 km of Kotoku-ji Temple.

With single group booking (at a time) the feeling is more relaxed and private than a hotel. Meals (breakfast and dinner) are a wonderful introduction to Japanese cuisine, and onsen bathing makes for a relaxing stay. People visiting for one nice will have a memorable experience. Those staying for longer should expect a relaxed stay.

A bit of a splurge after hiking the Nakascendo Trail, great value as it includes just about everything. Delicious buffet dinner and breakfast, so much choice. It’s fairly remote and we were the only westerners staying there. Free shuttle bus to station also.

Suhara (Okuwa) is a lovely small town on the Nakasendo on the Kiso river. It's in Nagano prefecture. There are some lovely houses. Trains are reliable but infrequent so plan carefully if travelling by train. Make sure you don't go to the town of the same name, on the same river, in Gifu prefecture as we did. Super place if you love peace, quiet and walking / hiking
