The arrival point of low-cost airlines and cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its pavement cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The next door Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by funicular railway.
A funicular also descends to the modern town – Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, and opposite is the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC play in a stadium to the north-east, while south-west is the train station from where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.
Booking.com offers several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighbouring Orio Centre shopping complex.

Beautiful old city, Città Alta, and less crowded than Milan. The cathedral is amazing. The funicular is also worth it if you don't want to climb up. The people are very friendly and seem to be happy all the time. Also, if you are flying, the airport is not far from the city center.

Views were spectacular!! Bergamo Città Alta is hilly so flat shoes a must. Also cobbled streets. Lovely little shops and boutiques and of course any number of restaurants, cafes and bars. Architecture was amazing. The funicular was a great ‘tram’ to bring you up to the higher levels of the Città Alta.

Really clean, beautiful city both upper and lower city are nice. Feels very safe. Lots to do. Public transport excellent and connectivity to other cities and locations is very good. Well worth visit or to base yourself in.

Bergamo is a very easy city to navigate and is not too swamped by traffic. Very clean and friendly. The old town part of the city - Citta Alta - was beautiful, very atmospheric with lots to see and plenty of restaurants. Bergamo is also a great base to travel elsewhere in the region by train, Milan less than an hour away and Verona around 2 hours distance. Transport around the city to the train station if needed or to the airport are cheap and very regular.

The old town on the hill has amazing views and the funicular it a great experience to go up the hill.
The same bus ticket is used for the funicular and use bus 1 to go up and return.
Just ensure you have sufficient time on the ticket.
Great restaurants in the old town and although a bit pricey it is well worth it.

The old city is 20min by taxi from train/bus station. You can take public transport but due to time we didnt try this. Bergamo old city is on a hill and you can go by car but most go by the funicular. There are only 45 persons per trip which takes 10mins but there is often a queue so best to ensure plenty of time if you are on a tight schedule. You can see most of the old town within 1-2 hours. The highlights are the churches and the restaurants. Some of restaurants serve traditional Bergamo food and wine and is definitely worth trying. They have a traditional pasta Scarpinocc, which is like a ravioli stuffed with cheese, bacon and meat. Rabbit with polenta was delicious. Wonderful food! Summary: you can see Bergamo in a day and its worth the trip
We absolutely loved our stay at La Valletta Relais. The staff were extremely kind and friendly and made us feel so welcome. They recommended a fantastic restaurant in the area and even called to help us make a reservation. Our room was lovely, cozy, and clean. The breakfast provided each morning was fresh and tasty with plenty of variety. The location of the hotel is definitely doable for walking into citta alta and we enjoyed staying outside of the busy part of town. We look forward to staying here again!

Situated on a street with nice and old vintage arhitecture houses, all renovated, restaurants, bars and even a Carrefour market 5min away. Bergamo Airport is at 30min away and the bus station is near, round about 10min. Central train station is at 25min by walk. The building is all renovated, redecorated inside-out, nice and cozy design, warm enough, clean all over the place! Strongly recommend it! It was such a nice experience!
What a wonderful surprise as we slept for just one night transferring to the airport. The hotel was beautiful and our room was spectacular. Roberta was very sweet and helpful. This is a very peaceful and quiet ares of Bergamo, in the old part of town. We slept very well and had a delicious breakfast. The hotel did arrange our transport to the airport with Aurora, she was a very good driver and it was a very pleasant journey. We plan to come back and stay again. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The perfect location close to the funicular station and the historical center of Citta Alta as well. The bus stop leaving for the airport and central station is situated just 5 minutes from the place. I appreciate the quality of heating in winter months since it is not usual in Italy. We loved the kitchen, comfort beds and a nespresso coffee machine. The communication with the host was great. I recommend this place for everybody who wants to enjoy Bergamo to the fullest. Arli hotel in Bergamo is 3* hotel, however it behaves like hotel with one more star. Good size room and bathroom with provided all toiletries as needed, Room has good size cabinet and also enough space. Welcome drink provided to clients included also finger food. Good variety of cold breakfast and espresso prepared from machine. Good location with close proximity to Bergamo train station and bus ride to Citta Alta (old city). Rooms equipment is pretty new in classic style.
This is a great option for your stay in Bergamo. Just 10 minutes from the center and 15 from the Funicolare to Citta Alta. You can park in an underground garage. The apartment was very cozy and clean with all the amenities for even a longer stay. There is a (whirl)pool and sauna available to start your day or relax after a long day of sightseeing. The breakfast was basic but good value and you share the space with some lovely old Italians :)
Location was in citta alta which was where I wanted to be, and right next to amenities and the tram yet not too noisy. The bed room was quiet and location was good if your focus was citta alta; to get to the bassa (lower Bergamo) just take the funicular, very convenient. The 1 bedroom apartment had enough space to sleep 4 pax but 2 pax would be optimal since it has only 1 bath/toilet.
The best location in Bergamo. You cannot miss a dinner at the Rooftop Restaurant, one of the best dinners we had during our stay in Italy and definitely the best wine pairing during that trip. Good breakfast, with many options to choose from.
