Newton Stewart itself is a little tired and the area in general needs investment. It is a beautiful part of Scotland with a fabulous coastline and a very unspoiled feel. Dumfries and Galloway could be a tourism jewel for Scotland with careful investment and management.

Newton Stewart, or the low land forests, does not show up in what to do in Scotland. This is a hidden gem. Nice town with lots to do in and around. Historic Museum is excellent if you like that stuff (I do). Nearby park and hills offers great hiking and biking opportunities, we went on two 3-5 KM hikes. Kennedy castle gardens was an unexpected treat and opportunity to get more exercise. This was a nice two day stop between the Irish Ferry and Glasgow.

We were told that Newton-Stewart was a charming village, even though it is very out of the way. We were looking for nearby accommodation from the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse. Turns out that the lighthouse was the only good thing on offer. We hired a night sky ranger to visit the dark sky park in Galloway, which was very cool. However, the village seemed shabby and most things were closed for dinner on a Sunday after 6.

Lovely town, friendly, nice river walk and forest walks.
Lovely town, friendly, nice river walk and forest walks. Nice eateries and coffee shops, 2 super markets.
Outside Newton Stewart nice also, visited Wigton and Isle of whithorn. Both lovely (good weather helped) Cree not got much but gem museum is v nice (good cafe too which you can use even if not going to museum) and wee folk museum is good, informative. Maybe a good destination for filling a rainy morning.
Spotlessly clean and cosy cottage in a great location for exploring the surrounding area. Very close to Galloway forest and lots of bike routes in the area. Easy access to supermarkets in Newton Stewart, there's a footpath from the cottage to town. Fabulous shower.
Lovely self catering cottage just south of Newton Stewart. The countryside on your doorstep but close to the village for facilities. The cottage is lovely and comfortable and provides all you need. Great place and would highly recommend.
