The Old Black Lion, hotel in Hay-on-Wye

Surrounded by beautiful scenery but just a few minutes' walk from Hay-On-Wye's centre, this charming inn has a traditional wooden-beamed bar.

Excellent pub with old character and the rooms were equally characterful! Very olde world feel which was very much in keeping with the character of Hay on Wye. Breakfast was superb quality with attentive service and quality ingredients.

Hay View Lodges - Barn End, hotel in Hay-on-Wye

Boasting mountain views, Hay View Lodges - Barn End features accommodation with a garden and a patio, around 47 km from Elan Valley. This property offers access to a terrace and free private parking.

A lovely characterful property with a great layout. The fish decor and corrugated walls won't suit all, but we were very comfortable. Hay is about 10nminutes drive away. Be aware that the satnav takes you to a house down the road towards Hay, so head past that and turn right down the gated road with other cottages listed.

Peaceful area with magnificent views of surrounding countryside. We loved the whole experience & couldn’t ’ fault anything at all! Superb B&B which has a lot to offer any traveller to the beautiful Wye Valley!! Would recommend Tomatitoes Tapas for choice of food. The Old Black Lion is traditional, but has a limited Menu in Mondays & Tuesdays. Hay on Wye has many independent shops to browse apart from the famous bookshops. Easy to spend hours there & have coffee or lunch in The Granary before visiting the famous Norman Castle which is steeped in history.

Hay is the most beautiful town, full of character, many bookshops, beautiful independent retailers, excellent coffee shops and restaurants and of course the castle. Hay would be very busy during book festival times and during school holidays but out of these time zones it is an incredibly peaceful and calming place to be. The town is vibrant but not overpowering. There are plenty of things to see and do from visiting the castle or a trip to the quaint cinema, whiskey tasting to tea and cake alongside the beautiful river Wye or for the more adventurous, a spot of canoeing. The quality of food in cafes and restaurants is outstanding and there is a good choice for every taste. Coming from a busy seaside town to Hay is a massive contrast but in a very very good way. It is peaceful, culturally vibrant , wonderfully located for exploring the surrounding countryside and a true gem in every way

Small compact village, with excellent choices to eat and drink or just to potter around the narrow streets or along the river. Thursday is local market day which brings even more character to the village.

An interesting town with a very relaxed bohemian atmosphere. Filled with bookshops, Antique shops, and quirky shops. Some good walks especially along the Riverside. The sort of place one would want to visit again! Warm, friendly and welcoming.

    Lovely little town.

Lovely little town. But by if you don’t like books don’t spend too many days there. Nice pubs, cafes and restaurants. It is on the river but you don’t feel that it is unless you explore and find there is a pleasant riverside walk.

We love book stores and used books, so what could be better than Hay-On-Wye. We had gorgeous walks along the river, a couple of lovely meals at the Cosy Cafe and the Tapas place. The place is so pretty and walkable. Highly recommended.

The location of the hotel us ideal for walking into the lovely town of Hay-on-Wye. The town itself is just lovely - quaint and unspoilt. Staff at the hotel were friendly and very welcoming. This was our third stay here and won't be our last! The couple of negative comments below don't take away from our overall Impression of the hotel, which is very positive. On this occasion our room (1) overlooked the beautiful garden and country backdrop, spoilt by the noise as mentioned below. We will request a different room next time.

I booked this property a year in advance to go to the Hay Festival. It was superb - great location and and furnished and equipped by someone with great style and attention to detail. The welcome basket was amazing and kept me going throughout my stay - not just tea, instant coffee but a loaf of bread, fruit, butter , jam and fresh coffee. I also loved the outside space.

The location could not possibly be better, right in the heart of Hay. The rooms are also really attractive, with wooden beams and very spacious. Comfortable, too.
