We chose Millcroft simply as a stopover on a roadtrip, and honestly didn't expect that much. But it was the best place we stayed for the entire trip. We had the superior suite, as it was that or the family room to get two beds, and the views are truly stunning. The beds were comfortable, the suite really spacious (two bedrooms plus a living area), and everything was clean and modern. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Parking was easy behind the hotel, and it was perfectly located for a morning run up into the hills. Couldn't ask for more!

Altbea is a tiny fishing village on the shore of Loch Ewe where the Arctic Convoys set sail with aid for Russia during WW2. There is a fascinating museum dedicated to the Arctic Convoys which is a must-see. There is also a Wartime Trail which takes you on a journey round the local area and highlights all the significant wartime sites. It is a beautiful area to visit and is steeped in history.

Aultbea is a stunning area.
Aultbea is a stunning area. We were blessed with the weather and the views over the mountains and the lochs amazing.
It could be a place for piece and quiet or use centrally for visiting the local area.
There is a local little shop for supplies.
The hotel was closed for refurbishment but we found a little cafe Oran na Mara up the road just brilliant.

If you're staying near Aultbea, give Conor at Ewe Canoe a call. He offers kayak and canoe tours in the area. He is very knowledgable and flexible. Also, The Barn Restaurant nearby was exceptional.

Andrew was very generous with providing everything needed for a pleasant stay. He is in the process of doing some minor renovations, but these are only surface and didn't in any way detract from the comfort of our stay.

Cartmel was in an excellent location around the corner from the Arctic Convoy Museum which we had travelled to see. The room was clean and comfortable. We were pleased to be able to have an evening meal although there was no option to have a dessert. Meals were taken at the breakfast bar in the room and delivered on a trolley which was super safe although I personally prefer to be in a dining room. We had a cooked breakfast with bread and butter but there were no cereals, juice, fruit or toast. Friendly hosts.
If the weather had been better we would have driven completely around Loch Ewe and aprreciated even more the part it played in WWII

A very quiet village (in the winter) .
A very quiet village (in the winter) . There is one very nice local shop with a small cafe bar and very friendly staff. the Local hotel has shut down indefinitely apparently. the crafts etc shops all close down for winter. a beautiful spot, with great walking opportunities (if you dont mind the weather).
A small room but provided everything we needed. We had breakfast and night cap in the "winter garden" with view, beautiful! The front door handle was kind of stuck so at first we thought we could not get in, but in the end everything was fine. Living with an unlocked front door needed a bit getting used to, but we felt very safe in Aultbea. Very helpful information on how to find food in this rather remote part of Scotland.
Zeida was a lovely host, very friendly and offered advice on places to go for breakfast the next day. We only wanted a quick overnighter as we were travelling north and this suited our purpose, especially at this great price. Bed was super comfy and we had a good, quiet night's sleep. Place was not spotless but this is a home, not a hotel, and was perfectly adequate.
Had a lovely stay in the most beautiful location, we felt really welcomed by the host and she was very nice with everything. Very comfy beds and nice and quiet, this is not a hotel/bnb type, this is a lovely home stay.
Beautiful little house in a quiet seaside village. Cute little garden to have some crackers and dip watching the waves.
Local hotel/pub was a delight. If you stop by the hotel, ask if you can meet Mojo.
