We chose Pau as a good stop-off point between Hendaye and Toulouse.
The city has a lot to offer with the chateau, cathedral and the River Gave running through it. It's a very pretty place with the backdrop of the Pyrenees. We discovered it's an important centre for kayaking and happened to be there the day the Olympic torch went through the city on its way to Paris 2024.
We tried to hire a car one day, but neither Hertz nor Avis could accommodate us, so if you're planning to hire a car, we'd recommend doing it ahead of time. We were there two days and two nights and I felt a third night would have been good.

Pau is a great city to visit, full of restaurants/cafes and boutique shops. The chateau is well worth a visit. The esplanade provides great views of the Pyrenees and the Beaumont Park/Villa area is well worth a walk. Lourdes is about 1/2 hour by car and Jurancon wine area is right on the doorstep. The indoor market is one of the best we have visited in France, with an amazing array of delicious produce. Overall we found this a vivrant enjoyable place to stay.

I visited this city second time because of trip to Artouste.
I visited this city second time because of trip to Artouste. You have to stay in Pau. I was travelling by train. It is very pity that there is no coordination between train and bus connection. I mean public transport. Especially if you want to travel to Artouste from Bayonne par example. It is not possible to combine the different transport and to change plans of the trip because of weather.

Beautiful old city with stunning views of The Pyrenees.
Beautiful old city with stunning views of The Pyrenees. L’Aragon restaurant on Boulevard cooked typical French local recipes. Staff lovely. Interesting French Resistance museum open Wed Saturday afternoons well worth a visit! Art Museum too.
Reception, housekeeping and at breakfast: friendly people everywhere! The Quality Hotel makes you feel very welcome. The room i had was a bit dated but very, very clean. A very decent breakfast with eggs fresh made to order. Great location in the middle of everything and a very good private parking (free!). The girl at the reception recommended Restaurant Le Berry for dinner. That was excellent advise, i had three really good meals there. Thank you!
Very convenient location in the center, close to everything, the building dates back to 1910, so don’t expect modern furnishings, but the room was surprisingly spacey and everything was clean and comfy. The receptionist - Sonia - was very helpful, friendly and professional. Breakfast was nice with a very pleasant staff. All in all, I had a very nice one-night stay, and if I ever find myself in Pau in the future, I will stay in BW again.
The Hotel is conveniently located, a short walk through Parc Beamont to the promenade des Pyrennes or to the centre de ville. The room was everything you could wish for in a hotel of this standing and was very comfortable. Access to the Spa was a small additional cost but well worth it. We didn't have breakfast but we dined in the cafe and were impressed with the service and quality of the food.
The location is absolutely fabulous 👌 Right in the centre of town, with an exit straight onto the Boulevard des Pyrénées. We went to Pau for the Classic Grand Prix and this was the perfect location, right near the track. We'll book ahead for another year's Grand Prix!
We had a room on the top floor and the view across to the mountains was beautiful. The reception chap could not have been more helpful, friendly and welcoming. We love Pau and have been a couple of times; we will definitely use Hotel Bristol again.
Man on reception very good and helpful, spoke English too.
Breakfast good,organised by same man.
Parking for car good. 2 supermarkets nearby. McDonald's 10 Min walk away. Good bus service. T2 outside hotel into Pau. 3 Euros for 2 pensioners.
Hotel Gramont is perfectly located in the heart of Pau and for the price it’s very acceptable, clean and comfortable. Since Pau is an ‘outdoor’ destination, the hotel was just for sleeping and it fills that role beautifully.
hotel in beautiful setting with view of the mountains. Our room was lovely and clean. As our French wasn't good enough we had a bit of a problem with breakfast. Otherwise everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Nice comfortable rooms and very friendly staff. Hotel is in the Center of Pau. Big Parking 100m from Hotel and this completely free!! I would advise anyone to try this Hotel with a nice historical background.
Nice little hotel in an old building in the center of Pau. The room was spacious with two big beds and a large bathroom. It was great to have a fridge in the room. Very nice breakfast.
A clean, decent room, very good for a short stay, and for a reasonable price. Free parking outside the hotel. The bus stop nearby if you want to visit the city centre.
