I loved staying at Fikir and Ray. The lodge itself is beautiful, and my room had lovely views towards the country side. It is located about 15 mins by foot from Lalibela's central area. The hotel arranged my transport from/to the airport, and my guide (Girma) met me there and was extremely helpful throughout my stay both with activities in Lalibela and a person problem I had. The owner, Abebe, also helped me with all the above and is extremely kind. Breakfast was at a nearby sister hotel, which also provided wifi as there are some problems with local connections. The staff at both hotels were incredibly kind and I would, and already have, recommended this to friends.

The property is beautiful , clean , well located , the bed was so comfortable , they have hot shower and the view from the room is BREATHTAKING. The best view of my life ( and I’ve been to 57 countries so imagine ! ) Great value for your money … if it were anywhere else in the world that hotel could charge at least 10 times more ! All The staff were absolutely lovely and they all made my staying so much more easier and comfortable . I felt safe as a female solo traveler and would recommend big time !

Firstly, Birjan, the receptionist arranged my transport pick up & return to the airport, facilitated for my tour guide & checked for any help I needed. During my 4 days stay, it was straight forward check in & out in a spacious bedroom & bathroom with bathtub. The bed is comfortable with clean beddings. I was amazed a bird knocked every morning to wake me up & hear more chirping of various birds. I felt the sights & sounds of nature so relaxing, heartwarming & closer to the Creator. Baladto was happy to serve the breakfast to start my day. Sitting by the terrace, I could see the greenery & the surrounding mountains. Also, the canopy of the churches & the Saturday market are visible which be reached by tuktuk in 10 minutes. Spoken with the Manager Getacho who offered me a free dinner. All these experience is good value for money. Need I say more?

Yohannes, the owner of Zan Seyoum Hotel, is a man with a heart of gold. I was welcomed with great love and kindness. I haven’t experienced such an abundant amount of care and attention anywhere before and I do travel a lot.
Seeing all of Lalibela, every UNESCO Workd Heritage church was made easy and seamless as Yohannes had provided me with a personal guide, Abeje. The entire experience was very agreeable. Everything was clearly arranged to be a well-oiled machine for tending to every last need of which any tourist could conceive.
It’s a shame the country (and tourism industry) has gone through not only the pandemic, but also a debilitating war. A treaty has been signed however and I travelled to Ethiopia not long afterward as it has always interested me and I finally had the chance to go. Not once did I ever feel unsafe.
Abeje, my personal guide, with whom I spent most of my time, especially sought to my every need while touring Lalibela and beyond. I trust him and Yohannes without a single doubt. They both are family men who love to serve and take their faith in God seriously. I opened up to them my last night there about the recent loss of my wife and it was as though I were talking with loved ones I had known for years.
Abeje was very insightful as well. I planned on going on another tour which goes through Abuna Yemata. He was well aware of the dangerous zones to avoid on the roads, and helped get me set up to continue my journey as safely as possible. I really would have been completely lost without him with me the entire time. I don’t usually use tour guides as I’ve done a lot of solo travel before. In this case Abeje was indispensable; I very much needed his knowledge and direction. Apart from keeping me well taken care of, Abeje was very well-versed in all things of which Lalibela is known across the world. He really gave the entire tour a deep level of historical and cultural insight.

The most important thing were for me the security. I felt so safe . 24hours security service. The room is super clean. Everything works. Electricity never been a problem. They have a backup Generator system, friendly staff. Tasty breakfast which is local and international food. The hotel is located to the famous rock hewn church of Lalibela and to the town centre. I was appointed a guide and he speaks very good English and has a good knowledge of the Church.

Absolutely fantastic place to visit in Ethiopia! Rock-hewn churches are much more impressive than the photos show. Standing in front of them and entering them give us a memorable experience, especially on Sunday ceremony time when locals are gathering and praying. The Saturday market is also amazing place to visit, when local people come from nearby villages and countryside and sell various kinds of products.

Try to prepay if you can sometimes the credit card machine is not working. In fact more often it is not especially if you use Amex. If I can do over pay for the rooms and pay for misc charges with pocket money.

One of the most astonishing historical places to visit, right neck to neck with Petra. Plus it is very safe and people is friendly. Also, there is plenty you can do outdoors, so COVID should not be a concern. Hope to see people coming back to Lalibela soon!

We stayed a Red Rock for 2 nights.
We stayed a Red Rock for 2 nights. Considering there is not much choice in the area, the hotel provides the perfect location amongst the 3 rock hewn church sites. Rooms are reasonable for the price and the mountain view we had was worth it but we had no water for the entire duration of our stay and had to ask staff to switch on the pump which failed to work and had to resort to using bucket water provided.
The hotel manager helped us arrange a guide and change currency for a fair price. Staff were helpful and did go out of the there way to open the restaurant on our first night when all other places in the area were closed. We were also invited for bbq to share with staff which was a a nice gesture.
Would recommend staying here for a couple of nights if you can oversee some of the issues whilst visiting the churches but no longer.

Fascinating place. The churches are wonderful.
Fascinating place. The churches are wonderful. If you get a chance, take a trip outside the town too and see some of the other churches. Make sure you get the right guide and try and deal with them yourself, most of the hotels rip you off I found. I cancelled one hotel (panaoramic view), and dealt with a guide myself and found alternative accommodation. They were actually ripping me off by quite a few 100 dollars I found.

It is difficult to describe Lalibela.
It is difficult to describe Lalibela. On one hand is a poor city, with bumpy streets. On the other, is the home of lovely people, unforgettavel architecture and breathtaking views. I was trully happy on the days I stayed there.
