It is a great university town with a very beautiful old town, good museums, music in the streets and lots to see. A trip is more than worth it! 5-7 days are recommended.
Especially the university museum on the mountain (old campus), several churches and the city museum. boat trips on the river and the many parks are recommended.
The KGB Freedom and resistance Museum is very impressive but not recommendable for little children. It shows the atrocities of different occupations.
Not recommendable is the modern National Museum outside the city. It has hardly any interesting expositions, hardly visible details because of poor illumination, etc... It looks very modern from the outside but the inside arrangements is rather boring and unimpressive.

The city has a very interesting scientific center AHHAA. Both children and adults will find it very interesting there.

Tartu is the second biggest city in Estonia, it has lots of places to visit, like museums, science centre, shopping centres, theatre, there are lots of walking to do, there are great local transport links in Tartu, there are plenty of hotels,B&Bs, plus apartments to stay in, most of the big shopping centres are in the city centre, there is also a free bus that takes you to one of the biggest shopping centres in Estonia, just on the outside of Tartu, that shopping centre is very big, and takes about two hours to walk round, it has a lot of different store, restaurants, etc there.
The local buses are also great to use,buy a tartu bus card, tap and go, or, buy tickets at Tartu bus Station, there are local buses, and city buses, there are lots of them, make sure to get a map, as it is a little difficult to know where to go/get off, if you do not know the area.
By the river, across the foot bridge from the city centre behind the market, you will find a nice beach area for summer, it is lovely there, and sandy, plus changing areas for everyone.

Fell in love with Tartu!
Fell in love with Tartu! An absolutely amazing city with a wide range of museums and activities, cosy and variable dining places, perfect for strolling and cycling around... So much to discover! I will surely return!
Try out the city museums, observation tower, printing history museums, science center, spa center, public transportation is easy to use and takes you all around town with an ease. Yet, one can also rent city bikes to move around 😀
Excellent location, as good as it can get. The hotel staff were very good, the breakfast decent: good quality, fresh enough, though there wasn't a large choice - also, labeling foods clearly was a nice touch. The rooms in the suite were mostly well furnished, except for the bedroom. (See the cons below.) The bathroom was great, designed and put together very well. The main room had excellent views, including the balcony.
Smooth check-in, helpful staff. Hotel room was beautiful facing out towards beautiful views of Tartu.

THE LOCATION WAS PERFECT, 2 seconds away from a selection of restaurants. Food stores and walk away from the centre.
The accommodation isn't extraordinarily luxurious, it provides excellent value for money. The location is excellent; it's very close to the city centre (old town). The inclusion of free parking is a significant advantage, as parking in the centre of Tartu tends to be quite costly. Plus, despite it's central location, no sounds of car traffic can be heard.
Included in the price is morning spa (flip-flops/sandals required!!), it has relaxing saunas and jacuzzis with large windows and view above the city.
Hotel room was quiet, not much outside noises. Breakfast was okay too, nothing special.
Tartu Turg marketplace and various shopping malls nearby. 10 minutes walk to old town.
We were a family of four and we enjoyed having two interconnected rooms. It was very close to AHHAA Science Center, main supermarkets and sightseeing. It was also convenient to reach Estonian National Museum by public transport.
Breakfast was brilliant, the staff were quick and polite.
Aitah!
Great kitchen facility and utilities. Very new apartment. Awesome location, walking distance of both old town and Estonian national museum, playground on premises, comfortable bed, nice outdoor seating on deck. Washing powder, dishwasher tabs and shower gel, shampoo was provided! Thanks.
Good breakfast with lots of Estonian breakfast dishes, loved the herring. The room had a theme and was very comfortable after a day driving. The hotel has a very quirky theme, kept me smiling for the entire stay
Nice and clean hotel. I really liked the restaurant, it had a nice atmosphere. Friendly staff and the location is really good. Breakfast had a modest selection but it was tasty and coffee was strong.
Very comfortable and clean room, you also get to use the amenities of the Hotel adjacent to it so you can do a nice morning smoke sauna and jacuzzi to then go and have some breakfast from the buffet.
Always happy to return to this hotel if have to stay at Tartu. Hotel staff is very kind as always. Highly recommend to stay there anyone who wants to have a good sleep and excellent rich breakfast.
The administrator was kind and returned some of the money for the trouble that was made. A huge parking lot. The room was spacious enough. A lot of Estonian candies served at the table of the room.
The apartment is perfect in every regard, location, building, size, quality. etc. It is a new building in a very central part of Tartu, self check-in is ideal, gym is available.
Two things cannot change - it's still a hotel, i.e you get a bed, a shower and some breakfast in return for your money; and it's still located in the very center of Tartu.
Our first stay at a hotel in Tartu, very satisfied, large superior room, great breakfast with a rich selection, both hot and cold. Special thanks for the extra pillow.
