Hamburg is 90% great and 10% squalid and intimidating! Plenty to do, but some areas are best avoided in the evening.
Public transport is very efficient and, if you buy the HVV card, which includes S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses and ferries, reasonable value. Hotels and eating out are broadly similar to London prices.

Make sure to explore the city on foot or by train, especially the areas around the Alster Lake and HafenCity. Use the efficient public transport system, including the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, for easy access to major attractions by using day pass. Take a harbor boat tour for a unique perspective of the city, and visit early in the day to avoid crowds at the popular Miniatur Wunderland.
