We were in the Jaguar room which was really quirky. There is a bar and restaurant in the same building but they are not the same business. It's self checkin, which I didn't know until we arrived. You get a message on your phone with details on how to access the reception. Parking is right outside.

The staff was helpful and friendly. We also liked the breakfast, which was modest but still very nice to have. The WiFi was okay. The beds were fine. The room was clean. The price was still fair, albeit you have to consider whether you will go for it despite the negatives.

Excellent room with a fireplace and a baldachin bed. There was enough wood to burn all evening. The whole facility made me feel like a knight in a castle.

Ostrava is a large relatively recently de-industrialised city. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the industrial heritage. It appears to be a series of individual areas that have amalgamated into a large town. The public transport system of busses, trolley-busses and trams is very good. There are good restaurants, but the nightlife is limited in the centre to a couple of small areas, one of which closes early. The people were very friendly and helpful.

The city is fun, but...
The city is fun, but...I just spent to much time on the public transportation app. Here is what I learn that would have been most helpful for American travelers.
If all of your party has their own Visa Credit card with tap to pay feature, you are already going to have an easier time!!! It doesn't take any American Express. You have to tap to pay go on the DPO, Ostrava's public transportation. The bus police doesn't always check, but as a visitor this was persistent fear.
If you have a child, who will ride you all the time, or you have a person who doesn't have a Visa with a tap to pay feature. You must only get your bus card at the Ostrava main train station!!!! I went DPO kiosk near an Albert supermarket, as stated on the DPO website! It was not dispensing cards. The city decided to get rid of cards recently, except at the Ostrava Main Train Station!
Don't you bother to bring cash on the public transit. It doesn't take it.
Don't try to get the 3 day pay by the DPO App. The app is broken. I even uploaded an image of my kids' picture and passport, and the app still did not take any money, and did get me a pass. It take 2-3 days for them to approve the photo and passport and but the app was not letting me purchase the 3 day pass. I only know that they still had cards because I sent an email to DPO after my stay and they advised me to go to the Ostrava main train station next time. Every regular Ostrava person, I talked to said the cards are not available, but I guess they have them only in one place.

Ostrava is constantly changing for better.y first visit was back in min 1990s and it was a horrible, dirty, industrial place. Now it is green, mostly clean and fun. The former Vitkovice area refurbished, remade to an excellent art, event and historic place with that industrial background defo worth visit and other places as well.

To be honest,Ostrava was chosen as the last night of my holiday in Hungary as it was convenient for travelling to Krakow for my flight home the next day.(Yes, I know it's in the Czech Republic, but my holiday was in Hungary).
My interests are football and railways, and I knew Ostrava was an excellent destination for a railway enthusiast like myself.
As for the city itself, apart from the Forum complex, which was excellent, I didn't see anything to particularly attracr me, although it was dark most of the time, so no disrespect to the city in case I just missed its great attractions. However I am aware it is an industrial city.

Ostrava is growing up really fast!
Ostrava is growing up really fast! I have not been there for couple of years and I was surprised how many new cool places are there and how many different activities you can plan there. It is definitely worth a visit! Unfortunately the local airport still does not provide any flights except only one from London and Warsaw so if you fly, like we did, you have to go from Krakow, Katowice or Prague.
This was the second stay and similarly to the first one, it was relaxing stay in comfort of this small retro hotel. Although located near center of Ostrava, it is a quiet place with a large park on one side. There is a nice small restaurant (Restaurace Dama Pykova) nearby, just five minutes walk. Parking on the street is available before late afternoon, when people living around start to return home.
I already had the pleasure to stay twice in the wonderful “Ruby Blue Hotel”. The hotel is very beautiful and clean. The service was excellent. Especially the waitress that served the breakfast was very friendly and the receptionist Mr.Javurek was always very helpful when I needed something. If I ever plan to travel back to Ostrava I will for sure choose this hotel again.
Pleasant hotel with reasonably sizeable rooms. Breakfast buffet was quite varied and changed every day, which was pleasing. Staff were generally friendly and helpful. Although the hotel is a bit out of town, it's within ten minutes' walking distance of a tram stop with direct service into the city centre and the two main train stations.
Very nice staying at Hotel Stracena City in Ostrava. Clean and large room, with kitchen and bathroom. Great position in the city center. There is no reception (self check in). The breakfast is served in the restaurant on the ground floor of the building, also suggested for dinner!
Very central location in Ostrava city center. The room was very clean, the staff was welcoming (although the late night check in took a bit long), and the breakfast buffet offered a good selection and was tasty. The WiFi had a good signal. Generally we were happy with our stay.
Nice and clean hotel, in the city centre, very comfy bed, nice shower.
Reception was pleasant and when I asked for an extra pillow, it was delivered within next 5 mins.
And, I jave to say, try the breakfast! Huge selection, everything very fresh.
Nice room overall. Close to shower &toilet. Comfortable bed. Secluded from street&traffic. Good security for entrance. Very friendly &professional receptionist. Nice little kitchenette. Would consider for next visit to Ostrava.
An awesome place deep in the forest for something different..Very tidy and clean. Stopped here enroute from Parague Airport heading to Zakopane, Poland.
Had a great view over the city. Went for a morning walk in the forest.
We chose this hotel based on the photos of the hotel/rooms and breakfast room. This hotel definitely did not disappoint! The breakfast was fantastic...probably the best we've tried in this price range in any Czech hotel.
In short when I am in Ostrava and I want to stay a little bit longer then Mercure is the only answer.
On top last time I had a steak in their restaurant it was even better than one I had in Gordon Ramsay 🙂
Entire hotel ir super clean - room, restaurant, public toilet and etc... Beds were comfortable, bed sheets were super clean and nice to touch. Breakfast was quite limited in choise, bet enough in quantity.
Very convenient location - near Ostrava Arena.
Very tasty breakfast, there are also dishes from menu.
Safe parking iside the hotel territory.
Free coffee/tea always available at the lounge.
