It was ok. The grottoes were amazing. Take a taxi there and back. It's worth the convenience. Would I go back again? No. Am I glad I went? Yes
The ancient town is not that great. But walking on the wall is an amazing experience.

The Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple are both “must see” places that will leave a visitor wonderstruck! Do not miss! The Datong City Wall is also an amazing structure that one should definitely walk on to see the architecture, know the history of the city and to take in the city views from atop it. The walled city is beautiful at every corner, roundabout and every street. Stay in a hotel in the walled city.

Super town with wonderful sigths such as the Grottoes, the Hanging Temples and Huayuan temple. Also the rebuilt city walls are well worth a visit. Make sure to bring a translator app. as very little English is spoken.
Food good and people friendly.

It's the authentic Chinese experience.
It's the authentic Chinese experience. Datong people are not used to foreigners, some of them literally freaked out just by seeing me. When they realised I could speak Chinese they went from lovely to adorable.
The grottoes and the hanging temple are simply amazing, I recommend also the wooden pagoda. The temples in the city center, the 7 dragon wall and the city wall were also great.
I would suggest a 2 full days stay at least.

We went to Datong as an overnight trip from Beijing specifically to visit the Yungang Caves. We arrived late afternoon and went to have dinner in the Old Town which has been partially restored and it is very beautiful to walk in the evening when lots of buildings are lit up. The highlight of our visit were the caves, which I cannot stress it enough, were AMAZING!!! Well worth the six-hour train trip and back from Beijing. We did not go to any other attraction but the caves themselves are more than worth the trip.
I fell in love with this hotel. It has a gentle, old-world charm that makes you feel like you're in a classic movie. The bedrooms are exquisitely furnished, the courtyards are beautiful and despite the attractions of Datong I spent hours just sitting in the courtyards enjoying the atmosphere. The location is perfectly central in this interesting city where there's much to see. The breakfast is without doubt the most eclectic I've ever been served, but there was much to enjoy. So many small welcoming touches. I was so sad to leave!
Staff very friendly. The hotel is very clean and Chinese old style. Beautiful. Good bed. Good and silent aircon. They can help you to arrange a short trips to different touristic places. Recommended.
Location was the best, the hotel is renovated is extremely clean, you feel welcomed like home! Definitely recommend for visiting Datong. Staff speaks English and is very friendly and helpful!
Everything was perfect, the hotel is a jewel and maybe the best experience in booking and sure the best cost/quality experience.
