Very good restaurants (our favourite La Casona, we went there 3 times). Very good place to stay to visit the surroundings. Access to bank machine. Many places where you could buy food to make your own lunches went going out for the day. The little place in the centre of the town is nice. We stayed at Terrace Lodge which we highly recommend. Can walk around the town. We always walked from our hotel to any of the restaurants or anywhere in town. Note that there are no gas stations in Putre. Gas can be purchased from few hotels. You buy a “jerrycan” at high cost.

It's very isolated and not very touristy.
It's very isolated and not very touristy. You can find surprisingly varied restaurants (including traditional chilean and peruvian food) and ridiculously cheap lunch specials. The town handcraft and grocery stores open very early around 7am and some remain open after 9pm, which gives you some room to improvise.
There's also a bunch of government agencies with offices in Putre, they were very friendly and helpful.
Putre is the ideal spot to launch expeditions to all the awesome places in and around the Lauca national park.

A stepping stone to the altiplano. Little quiet town.
A stepping stone to the altiplano. Little quiet town. Good birdwatching in the vicinity. Easier to explore the area if you have your own car (Lake Chungará route; Socoroma, Belén, Parinacota), but many tour operators are available, and some are locals and full of wonderful insight. To go further inside Lauca park (to Vicuña Reserve and Surire Salt flats) it is recommended to have a 4x4 car, and if you are traveling as a family I would wait at least 3 days in Putre/ Chungará to really acclimatize before going that far.
Great family nature walks in the sendero las Cuevas and by lake Chungará, short and wonderful, full of wildlife. Just wait until you can breath well to attempt them! :)
The hotel was well placed for access to the Lauca national park. The owner speaks excellent English and was very helpful in dealing with Europcar when we damaged our hire car. (n.b. Altitude sickness can seriously impair your driving ability, as we found to our cost. If we went there again we'd book an organised tour instead). The owner's husband took us on a good day tour to the north when our car was out of action.
Very peaceful and tranquil place at the foothills of Lauca NP, offers a great view and is located just outside of Putre. The hosts are super friendly and cook a great meal for you, so there is no need to get into the village at all. Rooms are very clean and there are plenty of warm blankets.
The room was very clean and comfortable with a great view of the surrounding mountains. Location wise, Terrace Lodge in on the edge of Putre, but everything is within walking distance.
People running the place were very helpful - even helping us buy some diesel in Putre when we were worried about running short! Breakfast was excellent.
