The beaches are nice. Some parts of town are pleasant (but not all!)
The local museum is worth visiting as well as the Valley of Azapa one, which is wonderful.
The beach is nice too.

El Morro was impressive, Azapa is very interesting, the city center was nice, the beaches were good and not too crowded. Above all, the people were very friendly.
There are many good places to eat in the city center. Sometimes they are a little hidden, but look for hidden gems.
Taxi's are a good means of travel and a lot can be reached on foot.

Avoid Playa Chinchurro and go to the Playa Lacua and Playa Livera instead - much cleaner, safer and you can swim there.
Be sure to check out El Morro mirador - it will give you a good sense of the city layout.
Go to San Miguel museum - it's a must-do.
If you want to go to Parque Lauca, be sure to book in advance as tours seem to be only available Dec-Feb.

Arica has some beautiful beaches to stay and relax a few days. 1 day is enough to visit the city center: Plaza Colon and El Morro. Avoid walk around after sunset. From Arica take a taxi to visit the Archaeological Museum of San Miguel of Azapa (it is closed on Mondays).

Small, partially poor and partially dirty town near the border with Peru. OK for a short stay, I would not recommend it for a longer stay, due to the lack of places to see and things to do, to the Chilean arrogance and to the expensive prices
Location was ideal. Security is important. The staff 'Marta' and others made sure to educate us where not to travel. The beaches are close walking down the road and there's huge mall to shop or eat a Windy's burger. Arica is upscale compared to Montanita, Ecuador or some beaches in Peru. We suggest walking the shoreline and enjoying various beaches and restaurants. The Chili's Peso . IE: 5,000 peso = $5.74 dollars. Or 23,000 mil pesos Colomiano.
Hostal Jardin del Sol was a great choice for me as a solo traveler passing through Arica. Even though I arrived late (around midnight), check-in was easy. The hot, complimentary breakfast was a nice addition. I especially appreciated all the local tips that Carlos gave me about my trip to the Azapa Valley and Lauca National Park.
This is probably the best hotel you will find in Arica. It has an extremely friendly staff (ever single person we met was kind and helpful); the rooms are very comfortable and include a well equipped kitchenette; and overall, this hotel is great value for the money. Oh, yes, it's right in the heart of the city center.
Cecilia makes you feel at home! We were only in Arica for a quick overnight stay, so the location near the bus station and the beach was perfect for us. Cecilia also gave us recommendations for an evening outing. The room and bed were very comfortable and exactly what we needed.
This is an amazing property, directly on the beach. The food is gourmet, truly exceptional for a small hotel, and teh staff are welcoming and warm. The architecture is cool, unique, and we enjoyed everything about our stay. We have been here twice and will definitely return.
The hotel is a bit out of downtown Arica but thats what makes it special. It's quiet, has everything you need on the grounds and a front row seat to the Pacific ocean. We found it very relaxing. The food from the restaurant was superb and the staff really does try to please.
New modern hotel with excellent amenities and a very relaxed feel.
Right beside the beach and some wonderful restaurants on the beachfront (Rayu, Waikiki). Some nice beachfront coffee shops 800m heading right from the hotel along the boardwalk.
Great stay
We paid 29000 clp, which is a fair price compared to other places we've seen in Chile. The staff was friendly and helpfull. Breakfast was good. Beds comfy and shower hot. Location is close to the beach and walking distance from bus terminals.
Wonderful hotel at a good price for Arica. Excellent restaurant, Rayu, half a block away. (Other choices also nearby.) Lovely beachside park across the street is full of families in the evening. A large choice of food at breakfast.
It is a great location right on the beach in Arica. There are some good common areas and lots of public spaces nearby. Staff were very friendly and spoke good English and Spanish.
