Antofagasta is the largest city in the Atacama region of Chile, a port city, and a transfer point for tourist going to San Pedro de Atacama. Overall Antofagasta is a decent looking city, but its kind of sprawling, and giving the fact its not a major tourist destination, there aren't tour operators lining up to offer you the best deals for day excursions. Nothing wrong with that, but something people should know. To get to some of the major places to see - you'll end up taking a taxi or uber.
That's ok though. There are still things worth checking out. Most of all - go to La Portada!! A beautiful natural sea arch just north of the city on the way to the airport. with many sea cliffs protecting sea lions, nesting seabirds like Inca terns, Peruvian boobies, and pelicans, and even sometimes Humboldt penguins are sighted. Get a taxi or uber. Not many regular buses.
Check out the bustling Terminal Pesquero for a cultural experience of the fisherman selling their fresh catches and throwing the remains to the waiting sea lions and pelicans. Freshest sea food ever!!
Also to understand the importance of mining and geology to the region check out the Ruinas de Huanchaca, the ruins of an early foundry, that might fool some into thinking its the remains of an Incan temple, with an accompanying museum highlights the relationship between geology and mining (nitrates, copper, etc.) in this very important region. Signs only in spanish, though an only basic command of spanish is necessary to appreciate it.

Antofagasta is quite a nice city and there's a lot to offer for the region. There are a lot of good places to eat and you see a lot of interesting culture. The ocean boulevard is safe to walk at night but i wouldn't steer too far off it. Robbery and crime is apparent

The city as such seems less pretty than functional.
The city as such seems less pretty than functional. However, impressive graffity-art makes walking around the city a great experience. The city museum is for free and provides a solid introduction to the mining history of the city. We afterwards visited one of the abandoned mining towns in the desert close to antofagasta (chacabuco). It was impressive. The entrance fee was 2000 CLP.
Pedro, the host and owner is very forthcoming and sympathetic. He gave us lots of advice for our further travel and was always there to help and answering our questions. We enjoyed talking to him. We arrived in Antofagasta at 4:45am by plane from Lima. By 6am we were at the hostel. Pedro has been waiting for us. As our room was not yet ready he offered us another room in the meantime where we could sleep as we had been on the road for 20+hours. Later in the morning we moved to our room
Nice accommodations. Stayed for one night for a trip to VLT. Family and three rooms. All stacked on each other with a balcony and water view. The road noise was pretty loud, pretty late. But, it was also a weekend night. I brought earplugs and I was able to sleep. Perhaps a room on the other side of the hotel would be more quiet.
All of my family enjoyed the breakfast.

It is by far the nicest hotel I have stayed in since I have arrived in Chile. Room fine and big, bathroom huge and plenty of hot water in the rainfall shower. Near plenty of restaurants. Staff friendly and helpful and they gave me a lovely packed breakfast on the day I was going to the Paranal observatory and also on the day I was leaving, as I had an early flight.
Fantastic hotel!
This hotel was the best I had stayed in at this price point in Chile so far. Spacious room, comfortable bed, lovely bathroom which was fully tiled with an amazing shower. There was also a small kitchen for preparing some basic items. The owner was helpful and the space was super clean. I used the parking for the additional fee which was very secure. Overall a great stay.
The room was a hotel quality room - very nice beds, linens, pillows, and a nice bathroom with a big, hot shower. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the location was perfect, right near the beach and a lot of restaurants and bars. The common areas were also very nicely kept and I met some other travelers who were wonderful.
My room was large and the bed was comfortable. There was an electric kettle with some free coffee and tea bags for a cold evening. Water from the shower was hot enough for a nice dip even at nighttime. When I left, the breakfast to-go was the nicest I had during my whole stay in Antofagasta in my opinion.
Everything was ok, host super responsive and answered when we needed to request towels or toilet paper. Apartment was super clean, well decorated and we had a very good stay. Supermarket is close by and the host gave us recommendations about places to eat and nice beaches in Antofagasta.
Excellent hotel with stunning views, beautiful architecture. Very modern and well-appointed, good parking, excellent restaurant and room service. Great ocean views. We did not use the nightclub or casino, but they were full at night and looked nice, well-attended and had good vibe.

There is a big choice of food for the breakfast. The room was very big. The bed was clean and comfortable. Very good location, by the main street in Antofagasta. The parking is available. There was possibility to leave the luggage for safekeeping.
Personally, I think the rooms were impeccably clean. They had everything necessary for a nice stay and to have a truly enjoyable experience. I've been to many hotels in my life and would definitely return to this one.
