The islands of Trinidad and Tobago are in many ways like chalk and cheese. Trinidad, the bigger and more developed of the pair, is known for hosting the most rambunctious of all Caribbean carnivals in its capital city, Port of Spain. Each February, thousands of brightly-clad revellers take to the streets, and dance to the deafening sounds of calypso, soca and steel drums. During the rest of the year, the island is better known for its industrialised economy. Tobago, on the other hand, moves at a much slower pace. Its coast is spoiled with white-sand beaches and dazzling coral reefs, while inland are swaths of thick jungle, teeming with wildlife. It’s also home to just 5% of the national population. Put your feet up under the thatched-roofed pier of Pigeon Point, and doze with the sound of swaying palms in your ears. Go snorkelling in the secluded Pirate’s Bay, or diving in Buccoo Reef, to swim with schools of tropical fish. Or go hiking in the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. But there are certain things these two islands do have in common, other than their nationality: delicious Caribbean cuisine, excellent bird-watching, and a welcoming culture that will warm your heart. There’s a good range of accommodation on both islands, from hotel resorts and guesthouses to private villas and apartments.
