This multi-coloured and complex African metropolis is the biggest city in South Africa and probably the living example of its much debated history. Johannesburg is not the capital of the country, but it represents its main economic hub, and is also the seat of the Constitutional Court.
Popularly known as Jo’burg, the city is constantly under renovation in all areas, allowing it to slowly but decidedly overcome its ‘Apartheid’ legacy. The Central Business District (CBD) alternates historic buildings with skyscrapers and a lively nightlife. Suburbs like Melville, Newtown or Rosebank have a bohemian atmosphere. With some of the best Johannesburg hotels, Sandton City and Hyde Park are modern residential and shopping areas.
Get to know South Africa’s history at Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum, and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Natural areas like the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Cradle of Humankind’, the Lion Park Nature Reserve, or the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve are located outside the city.
OR Tambo International Airport is the largest airport in Africa, while the smaller Lanseria Airport offers connections to mainly domestic destinations. Hotels near Johannesburg’s airport are a popular choice to avoid the last-minute rush. Check out the wide range of Johannesburg accommodation deals available on Booking.com.

Joburg is "interesting" to see it but you never feel safe mainly because everyone tells you you are not safe.
The really interesting part is visiting Soweto with a local guide - this is something that helps you understand why Joburg is what it is right now.
We have seen the superrich white people´s areas with their homes that cost millions and we have visited the illegal housing barracks in Soweto near the Soweto soccer stadium. Joburg has it all - but it does not merge in a good way. Definitely not a place I would like to live in.
As a white person you leave a bit ashamed and in deep thoughts.

Two things are equally true: I love this city; it's a hard place to love. And it's become harder to love since I lived there 20 years ago, with things like consistent water and electricity no longer taken for granted. Driving there is a special kind of adrenaline rush (especially downtown), crime remains endemic, and the city is just crumbling. But it's also an incredibly friendly, diverse, culturally vibrant place. I go to Cape Town for beautiful views of the mountains and the sea; I go to Johannesburg to see old and dear friends and make new ones.
The Premier Hotel Quatermain is a gem in Sandton, Johannesburg. Lot of well decorated and comfortable spaces to relax or have meetings.
The food was excellent and the staff exceptional.
This was my 7th time staying there and the quality hasn't changed, though the tough conditions for hospitality.
The free settle service within a 5km radius is a real plus which makes it easy for people coming from the airport with the Gautrain, as I always do.
I also appreciate the upgrade to a more spacious room.
Great location situated just off a main road but extremely private in the Sandton area. Within walking distance of the Sandton CBD. Great security at the complex and a very welcoming and friendly host at the property for who nothing is too much trouble. The units are well furnished and provide all the necessary basics for an apartment living in the city. Great for a couple on a short break or business people spending a few nights in Johannesburg for some work.
The hotel had a great old world feel about it whilst being equipped to modern standards inside. So often hotels are cookie cutters and you lose the feeling of where you are - the Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton was true to its self and it's city. The staff were fabulous in every team and made us feel very welcome and looked after us like we were family! Food and drinks and chilled evenings in the hotel were all great!
Spotless rooms and fabulous modern decor. Thoughtful and warm welcome from our host (thanks Alex), and wonderful breakfast choices at this oasis on the edge of Johannesburg set in peaceful grounds. We feel revitalised by the experience. A gem of a retreat. Loved it and so did my fellow travelers. Will definitely be back for R and R at this gorgeous Guesthouse with a 5 star hotel experience. Good Covid-19 protocols.
The clean rooms with excellent A/C, the good location, the polite and helpful staff. Even the breakfast food was nice and plenteous, and I could see that they were trying to get me to enjoy my stay. Overall, I had a fantastic experience during my stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfortable and enjoyable accommodation in the Central Business District of Johannesburg.
Very convenient location. Only a 5 minute walk from East gate mall. The Bolt taxi service was also brilliant and met us at the reception. Breakfast was abundant. The staff even packed us breakfast packs as we had to leave for a tournament at 6am. Will definitely use the Stayeasy hotel's again. Cost us R57 from the airport for 4 Adults.
It was exceptional! It is definitely one of the best places I ever stayed. The decoration is unique and extremely nice. The host did everything in her reach to make us comfortable. On top of that she has a super cute dog, Bella! I strongly recommend the place for those who are tired of staying in hotels that look all the same!
The service was the best... The room was clean and fresh, the breakfast was to die for. I visited few hotels in Johannesburg... This was the best so far.. The staff was amazing.. Starting from the reception, breakfast crew, lunch, dinner, the bar, the house keeper. My sister and I felt so welcomed
It was very clean the location is fabulous to get to Gemilli for dinner and Nostra to dance the night away! The decor far exceeded expectations, very much the standard of 4/5 star hotels and value for money! The staff were also incredibly lovely and helpful! Will definitely stay here again!
The room was superb. Large space also the setting area was very great compared to the other holes around south Africa. The price was very reasonable for the room. The view was fantastic. Best hotel in joburg with a reasonable price. I rate it 5 star
I loved everything about this hotel
The room was spacious, bathroom was very large and nice
Location just perfect, u can walk to sandton mall, there are so many restuarants around, also the chef makes the best soup u must try it daily
Well sized room for a lone traveller. The hotel is in a premium neighbourhood in Johannesburg with a matching shopping mall to boot.Nearby train station for fast connection to downtown City centre or O R Tambo international airport.
Located in Sandton, near the railway station but the hotel can organize a very efficient taxi from the airport. Everyone very friendly and helpful and I had an excellent breakfast on the Sunday I checked out.
