We arrived at night and left early the next morning and the Guest Farm is located just outside the town so we didn't get an opportunity to visit Bethulie itself. However, as a pit-stop, it was perfect ... we enjoyed the very pretty drive along the Gariep Dam to get to the farm and were able to hop back onto the highway (near Springfontein) the next morning to resume our journey home. Afraid we didn't have time to visit either the concentration camp memorials or the Royal Hotel book lounge, which were the attractions we knew of.

if interested in history Bethuli offers the history of the site of a Boer War British concentration camp. Trudy Venter curator of the local museum and author of books on the war and surroundings is well worth contacting for a guided tour.

Bethulie has a lost history of the worst Boer War concentration camp set up by the British. Trudie Venter a local resident, Author and historian provided us with insight into the history of Bethuli and surroundings. Bethuli is a very small village, however gives you easy access to the surrounding areas.

I was there for an over night stop on a motorcycle. I visited the Boer Concentration Camp Cemetery - do not leave Bethulie without digging into that hidden part of our history. Also ate at Die Kar pub - good pizza (that is also the only thing I had)

This historical house in Bethuli with the decor to match the period is a must stay if you travel through the Free state to the Eastern Cape or elsewhere. A warm welcome and professional staff with a host that care and a lovely breakfast will make you feel at home in this lovely place. Lots to do and see in the area as well like driving over the longest bridge in SA just as a teaser.
