The home of jazz, intriguing New Orleans evokes images of Louis Armstrong, wrought-iron balconies and mouth-watering Cajun cuisine. Louisiana’s largest city, in the heart of the Deep South, the ‘Big Easy’ is being regenerated in the wake of devastating hurricane Katrina.
One area relatively unscathed was Bourbon Street – where jazz saxophones ring out of traditional bars interspersed by others offering more colourful nightlife. There are several New Orleans hotels near Bourbon Street, spread around the French Quarter with its distinctive Creole architecture.
To the south is Jackson Square, dominated by the Disney-esque St Louis Cathedral. Horses and carts wait patiently by the square, and locals set up their stools and start playing catchy tunes. Just behind is the legendary Mississippi River whose waters are still plied by paddle steamers.
From the river you get great views of the CBD skyscrapers and beside them is the huge Louisiana Superdome sports venue. Booking.com has several hotels near the Superdome, including some on Canal Street – a historic road where streetcars and the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras carnival pass down.
In the northern suburbs is New Orleans City Park, one of the oldest US parks and larger than NYC’s Central Park. Waterways lining it flow into large Lake Pontchartrain bordered by a bayou – the typical wetlands of the state.
I was a New Oleanian pre- and post- Katrina. The vibrant, "happening" city that it had once been is slowly regaining that status, thanks to the endless influx of tourists visiting the French Quarter. I am a teetotaler and a vegetarian, but for the indulging type, NOLA is THE place...!

Lots to see, lots of walking.
Lots to see, lots of walking. Went with my grown daughters, and we enjoyed experiencing the city. Driving downtown is very intimidating, try to arrive well before 5pm if staying in the French Quarter.

The hotel itself was secure, but it didn’t have the quality I was looking for. They updated it poorly and the amenities were not available. No breakfast! location was the only thing I liked about the entire experience. The pictures they showed online are two different rooms. The staff assigned what room they feel is necessary on the amount you paid.

Enjoyed our various tours - Garden District walking tour with Two Chicks Tours, French Quarter walking tour with Friends of the Calibo, all-day plantation and swamp boat tour with Tours by Isabella. Visited the WWII museum but be sure to allocate enough time (probably 4 hours minimum). For music, we went to Maison on French Street which had some great, classic New Orleans Jazz on Saturday night. Would recommend the beignets at Cafe Beignet over Cafe Du Monde - they were larger and fluffier - and just tastier.

I have been to NOLA before.
I have been to NOLA before. I had just exited a cruise ship and decided to stay over one night, other than risk getting to the airport in time. As such, I just concentrated on the French Quarter and found a great hotel. Walked everywhere, ate good food, enjoyed the street art and music, as well as great jazz and blues in the evening. I made the most of my 30 hours.

We are Louisiana natives and travel to NOLA at least twice a year for long weekend getaways. The food is the best on the continent. The local live music scene is on par with Austin and Nashville. And as long as you avoid going on Saints home game weekends, Mardi Gras, or during a festival weekend, the crowds aren't terrible. That being said, EVERYONE should do Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest at least once.
The property was clean and well maintained. only 15-20 minutes from the French Quarter. Free parking with well lit parking area. Badge access to main entrance. Staff was very nice and attentive, especially Wanda. Breakfast was a step above a continental breakfast. Staff was always around cleaning up. A quarter of a mile from I-10. A couple of nice restaurants nearby especially New Orleans Burgers and Seafood. The suite was nice with the beds being very comfortable and the walls were thick enough to not hear our neighbors.
location was perfect, close to all the French quarter but quiet. Close enough to Mardi Gras parades but not too close ! There were other good restaurants nearly if you preferred somewhere bit more upmarket and relaxed. We loved Muriel’s in Jackson Square and Gianna. Evening snacks and drinks in hotel 5.30-7 were great if you didn’t want to out or just for an aperitif! Staff were very professional and helpful, especially Erin and Matt who made a real effort with finding us the room which worked best for us.
The hotel met all our basic needs, was in a great central location. Felt safe with the staff around and security guards. Right near the st.Charles street cart. And not a far walk into the garden district. 25 min walk to the French quarter and Mississippi River. Rooms were good size, beds were comfy and clean. Was nice they had coffee and tea at all times. And some free options for breakfast, juices, milk, cereal and hot water. Staff was nice and helpful. Pool was great. And nice outdoor courtyard area.
The location was great, on Decatur Street, near Canal, but without the road noise of being on Canal. A great location for access to Royal St., Iberville, Bienville, easily walkable to the entire French Quarter. We loved the mini-kitchen, with fridge, microwave, coffee maker. We had a small suite, so a separate bedroom and living room. Very comfortable for a New Orleans stay. The fourth floor and seventh floor courtyards were really nice, a great way to be above the city, and enjoy the outdoors.
Site 61 Hostel is a cool place. It was by far the most affordable accommodation we could find in New Orleans and we were given a big room to ourselves. The location is pretty good, about a 10 minute drive north of the French quarter. I particularly liked the effort the staff went to in ensuring this wasn't a "party hostel" with strict quiet hours which was good.
The apartment was fabulous! If you know anything about New Orleans, you know "all" areas aren't the safest, but this quaint apartment was certainly safe! It even had a gated driveway to park in! It was so close to the French Quarter and New Orleans areas, that its famous for, that walking was very easy!!! I will certainly stay here again!!!
If you want to have a safe stay in New Orleans, that's the place to go. We had a gorgeous room and the location is awesome. You're in the heart of the French Quarter. To make sure no bad luck happens to your car during night time, use the parking at Place D'Armes offered by the hotel for like 42$ a day.
Location was perfect in the French Quarter. Close to everything but not very loud. We loved the vibe, fragrant fresh flowers in the entryway, and the very friendly & helpful staff. We’ve been to New Orleans before and plan to visit again, Hotel Villa Convento is our go to Hotel now!
The location in the French Quarter of New Orleans was excellent; we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. The staff were all very courteous and professional. It was very convenient to be able to park securely at the hotel rather than farther away as happens at other hotels
Property is centrally located in the French Quarter. While just off Bourbon, hotel is still quiet and provides a traditional New Orleans vibe. Staff was just amazing. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The wine bar downstairs is lovely. Would definitely return.
Excellent location to the French Quarter and downtown New Orleans. Very spacious, clean apartment, kitchen well equipped. Unfortunately could not use the pool as weather was very poor but it would have been excellent on hot days. Would definitely recommend.
The room was fine, the hotel was clean, comfortable, near the French quarter and Bourbon St. The lady that is on night shift is the nicest person I talked to in New Orleans, she helped me with everything I needed and gave me really good recommendations.
I didn’t like the French quarter much, it’s better for the younger crowd but we went on canal street and used the streetcars to see the garden district and also did a ferry trip
Beautiful New Orleans style mansion, great location quiet and nearby French Quarter. Friendly staff. Minimal breakfast available. (Coffee, fruits and cereals)
