Walkable city though a little on the sleepy side.

Walkable city though a little on the sleepy side. Not for those who are in a hurry or crave shopping in mall type environments. In my opinion it rains excessively here but that is what Keelung is meant to be. Good base for travel to Jiufen and Shifen and northern Taiwan as the city is far less congested than Taipei, not to mention considerably cheaper to stay

Keelung is an underrated place for traveler.

Keelung is an underrated place for traveler. You could do much more in here by utilizing the train network. A short 2-3 days trip is what you need to explore the northern taiwan. The variety of local food may be slightly different than most part of taiwan.

Lots of history to explore, but only buses as no MRT.

Lots of history to explore, but only buses as no MRT. Great night market. Lots of little streets and food everywhere. Great walks around the Port and up into the hills. Be careful using Google Maps as (1) incorrectly states bus routes, especially to Heping Park as the 101 goes to about 300m of the main entrance, (2) still on Heping Park, Googke Maps says the alternative entrance is usable, but it's been closed for ages, (3) google maps also suggests only one way to various points of interest on foot, but most have multiple was and often quicker and more direct. Good amount of cheap stores, but equally the genuine stores too, eg Roots,New Balance, Adidas, etc

At first view, Keelung might seem rundown.

At first view, Keelung might seem rundown. I thought it was a great place for a short break as it's not huge, and you can walk around easily and find everything you need, such as restaurants and other shops. The public transport is easy to use, with buses to many sightseeing areas and very regular trains and buses to Taipei. We went to Jiufen, Yehliu and Heping Dao when we were there, but there were many other places that were also accessible. A walk in the evening around the night market was a great way to end the day.
