I loved every minute of being in Phrae. Not only is the town charming and pretty but the whole valley is just a lovely place to be. Relaxed atmosphere, amazing people and some fantastic food to be had if you know the right places to go. It's pretty much essential to have a car, and the roads are on the whole very good. Some really nice drives to be done around the mountains as well as exploring the towns and villages on the valley floor

Phrae was not as touristy as we expected.
Phrae was not as touristy as we expected. We stayed inside the old city and had access to the old city wall. A short walk on top of the wall gave us great views of the moat, the mountains and took us straight to the night food market where we had dinner three nights in a row. There's also a nice cafe there serving good cakes and desserts as well as coffee and drinks.
We had a rental car and had no problem getting in and out of town to visit the surrounding countryside everyday.

It's a lovely place with a nice compact old town which is easy to get around by car, bicycle and even walking.
People are very friendly and a couple of recommended restaurants are the Gingerbread House and Rommaiyai.

Phrae was a beautiful smaller town.
Phrae was a beautiful smaller town. We took a bus from Chiang Mia to here and the scenery during the drive was beautiful. Everyone was nice and there are a ton of small coffee cafes with free AC and great coffee and snacks. Two of our favorites were Be Leaf which had the most amazing fruit out front and Sticky Rice with Mango and Sugar Bites. We visited some beautiful temples and the small town atmosphere was great. We rode bicycles and it felt very safe being out and about.
