What an amazing hotel and location. We were absolutely blown away, as this went way above our expectations. Marvao is a vert special place and the location of the hotel is as far as you can go to, at the top of this very steep town. It is right next door to the castle entrance and the whole town is surrounded by castle walls - you truly are in a fortress. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Teresa, we knew that this was going to be somewhere that we would not forget. The road up to the hotel is very narrow and you are probably better with a small car (we had a Fiat 500 which was fine), and once you have tackled what is a bit of a scary ride, it is well worth it. We were in room number 15 which was superior and well worth paying the extra for. The room was very comfortable with a canopy bed, but the views - oh my - you cannot explain to anyone what that is really like. They are breath taking and you do have your own terrace which includes 2 chairs and a table plus 2 sun-loungers. We sat with our bottle of Alentejo wine trying to take it all in and watching several Eagles glide over us which made it even more special. Even the bathroom has a window that looks out over the view but there is only a bath (which is facing the view), with a hand held shower. There is a jacuzzi available (you do need to book this with Reception) which again looks out over the incredible landscape. There is plenty of parking available next to the hotel and the buffet breakfast had plenty to choose from. We went to a great restaurant for dinner (Portuguese cuisine), which Teresa recommended and booked for us and was only a few minutes walk, then we went back to our room to watch the most incredible sunset from our terrace. We really did feel that this was the closest we could get to heaven!! We will with no doubt, go back to marvellous Marvao and to the Dom Dinis.

The room is very clean and the location is amazing. We normally stay here when visiting Marvao as it is good value for money. It’s not luxury and the fixture and fittings could be nicer but you get what you pay for. It’s comfortable and the staff is very friendly. We will come back in the future.
Situated in the centre of Portugal’s highest town, this small guest house features air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi. The regional restaurant offers panoramic views of Marvao and its castle.

I liked the little room a lot, it might not have been spacious but it didn't lake anything and the view was amazing. If you can you should stay for a few days and enjoy the village and the surrounding area

Quinta do Barrieiro had been recommended to us by friends and it did not disappoint. Our room was lovely and spacious and the bed extra comfy. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the farm dog was so gorgeous! Even though we went during winter it was still a great spot for a lovely break.

We stayed at Quinta d'Abegoa's apartment, Casa do Souto, which is very cosy and ideal for two people. Everything is really well thought out so the apartment felt bigger than it actually was. The bed is very comfortable and the shower is excellent. The outside space is beautiful - we loved sitting out, listening to the birds and the bells from the sheep, while enjoying the views of the both the castle and over towards the mountains and Spain. We made the most of being able to walk to restaurants in Marvao (although it is uphill all the way!) but we also cooked at the property - the kitchen is tiny but is very well-equipped and has everything you need to self-cater. Our host, Rosa, looked after us extremely well, bringing us breakfast every day, and nothing was too much trouble. We love the area around Marvao and will definitely return for another stay at Casa do Souto.

We stayed at Dom Dinis, overlooking the valley below, in December 2023. Hardly any tourists, wonderfully friendly area. Be sure to visit the church (Igreja de Santiago) of which Saramago wrote on his journey around Portugal! We ate at the excellent Varanda do Alentejo, the lamb stew was fantastic.

The castle is a must see.
The castle is a must see. The views from all directions were unobstructed and gave one the feeling of what it must have been like centuries before when the castle was used as a defensive weapon. Well worth the trip and one had access to almost the entire outer wall.

We stayed in Marvão for 3 days, 2 nights and spent the days touring around. I HIGHLY recommend taking the biking tour with Rail Bike Marvão, it's 16km through the heart of Marvão's nature.
I also HIGHLY recommend you visit the small town or Castelo de Vide.

Just being here gives a lift to the soul!
Just being here gives a lift to the soul! It is beautiful, everyone is so friendly, every winding street you walk down brought a smile to my face, and THAT VIEW!! You turn a corner and it takes your breath away. I walked here from Castelo de Vide and the path was well marked and gorgeous, with birds of prey hovering and I even saw what I think is an Egyptian mongoose.... Lots of beautiful arts and crafts and good restaurants. I stayed at the Estalagem de Marvao which couldnt be faulted, really beautiful and friendly. Totally recommended (tho some parts of the town walls are not for the faint hearted - but there are plenty of steps down if it gets too much for the vertiginous!).
We loved our stay at Casinha de Marvao. The house was clean and comfortable and it was really cosy with the wood burner. The kitchen was well equipped. The location was great - beautiful views towards Spain and we enjoyed being able to leave the house to wander around the town and castle in the evening to see the sunset and during the day for more exploring of the castle. We enjoyed the well marked walking trails to Portagem and Castelo de Vide and so didn’t need to use a car during our stay.
It was adventurous to drive the narrow, very narrow streets of historical Marvão. Lol. Still have PTSD. However, I wouldn't trade the stay for something more conventional.
The host was amazing, no English, but google was helpful. She was extremely friendly and warm despite waiting for us for a couple of hours... Greeted us with a local liquor. :)) after the drive it was needed. Beds were comfy, the house was very clean and cozy. Perfect locao, right in the midst of everything.
We love Marvao and Varanda Do Alentejo is conveniently situated in the heart of this delightful village.
Our welcome was very warm and our host was friendly and spoke excellent English. The place had been recently renovated and was simply and tastefully decorated. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom perfect and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was across the narrow street in the stylish up market restaurant and it was excellent.
Check-in/out with Sonia was easy and she was very welcoming. We really appreciated her kind gifts of bread, chorizo, jams and red wine - all of which were delicious.
It is a lovely house with everything you need to self-cater. It has a fabulous outdoor area with lots of seating, a swimming pool with loungers and a BBQ. The location is very scenic and ideal to visit Marväo and Castelo de Vide. We would have loved to have stayed longer.
Gorgeous little house, completely redone with attention to the minimal details. very peculiar division of the space, which makes it very cozy and architecturally amazing. Everything seems to be brand new, sparkling clean, and they thought of absolutely everything a guest May want or need. The hosts Alexandra and José were fantastic. A flawless, extremely comfortable and peaceful place firm which to enjoy the magic of Marvão!
Located in a beautiful country side, surrounded by nature is great location to hike or bike. It is close to Castelo de Marvao, Castelo da Vide, Menhir de Meade and other lovely medioeval towns, is a place to relax or work with creative projects. I could stay longer if I had have the time, this place is in my list for my next trip to Portugal.
This Studio was spotless and beautifully decorated. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchenette was enough to get you going.
The staff was friendly, the grounds beautiful. A place to relax, put your feet up and Recharge.
Marvão is nearby with sites and restaurants. We will definitely be back.
Great location in a very cool castle town. The room was clean and comfortable and our host was wonderful. Very warm and friendly. And they prepared a wonderful breakfast. There was a terrace we could use with a beautiful view. We loved Marvao and we would stay at Casa da Arvore again.
Estalagem do Marvâo is a real gem and worth the drive up winding roads to get there. The beds were comfy (the absolute quiet of the town was a plus), lots of hot water and a good shower, and a lovely breakfast. We would love to come back and stay here again.
Perched on the hill, the hotel has an old world feeling but is clean and uncluttered. staff were responsive and breakfast was great(except no Portuguese coffee). Parking was right at the hotel.
If you are staying in Marvao, you couldn't pick a more gorgeous place. The views are amazing, the hospitality is wonderful, and the breakfast is perfect, highly recommend!!
Great hosts and beautifully decorated place - we couldn't ask for a better place. Breakfast was also nice and homey.
Such unique experience in Marvao, high recommend!
