I loved Arequipa - it is safe and clean with beautiful architechture. Super easy to get around and the locals were mostly friendly. I stayed just 3 nights, and could have stayed one more to just wander around a little more. You can eat affordably - look out for the hidden gems in the laneways with a chalkboard at the front that simply says, "MENU" - those meals are usually just 7 soles and is where the locals eat. It is a basic menu but was yummy.

Arequipa's downtown--and other nearby areas like Yanahuara--is beautiful. It has many places to discover, explore, visit especially if you are interested in Andean colonial culture. I love it. The Santa Catalina Monastery alone is enough to justify a visit to Arequipa. There are many short trips to other places away from the city that are worthy to take (Collca Valley, climbing the impressive volcanoes that surround the city, the Sillar Route, for example).
Beware, however, of the poor touristic administration: some places (like the Cathedral, the Museo Andino del Sur) simply do not respect their own rules and they just are not available to visit and/or impose a guided visit even if you don't want one. There is a lack of respect towards visitors. Sad.

Arequipa is gorgeous, the food was amazing, and the weather was *chefs kiss*. You only need 1-2 days to enjoy the city itself, but I wish I had stayed a bit longer to do some of the longer trips like the multi-day Colca Canyon hikes or the hikes up some of the nearby mountains/volcanoes.
Food was excellent. Personal favorites were Victoria Picanteria (Traditional but ellivated Peruvian food) and Red Pig (One of the best burgers I've ever had: The Big Boy).
My trip to Colca Canyon was one of the single day trips. You spend the first few hours and last few hours getting tossed around in a bus on the winding roads and minimal time in the locations. So keep that in mind. The white-water rafting was fun and accessible enough most anyone could do it.

Arequipa is the most beautiful city centre in Peru and my favourite city. I love to visit for short relaxing breaks to get away from the stresses of work and Lima.
There are some fantastic restaurants, and the Monastery and Cathedral are a must to visit. It is also a great base for visiting many other attractions in the south of Peru.

This hotel was very charming and located close to the main square. We got a suite the first night and the room was large and came with a water kettle, tea bags, a tv, a safe, and a very hot shower. The hotel was more than happy to hold our luggage at the reception area when we traveled to Chivay for an overnight trip. Morning breakfast was tasty and they served up the best coffee I had in Peru.
A wonderful, centrally located hotel. The rooms were a great size, with comfortable beds and the best large hot shower in the whole of Peru. The staff are super accommodating and they deliver a nice included breakfast. Definitely would recommend this property, and it is particularly amazing in the cold weather!
The family were SO lovely- they really made the trip for us :D thank you guys.
Breakfast was great- lovely terrace with mountain backdrop.
Booked Colca Canyon through the hotel and it worked out much cheaper!
Arequipa is a beautiful place.
