Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!
I travel frequently. Fez, and Morocco in general, is underwhelming. While several day trips are possible, the main attraction in Fez is the Medina. It is interesting to walk through it but after a few hours I had enough. You cannot enter most attractions (Mosques, University) so you're left wandering the Medina. The shops are diverse in terms of merchandise but they are overly aggressive and often rude.

I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased.
I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased. I love this city and it has a special place in my heart. I learned Arabic here over 20 years ago, I came back some years later and worked as an English teacher and Arabic to English translator, and my recent visit was a visit for the peace of my soul.
If you are going to visit with a family, I would recommend an apartment in the new city (la Ville Nouvelle), especially the two that I stayed in. The old city (the Medina) is not easy to navigate with a stroller and the facilities in the riyads there are not family friendly (unless you are willing to pay top dollar), to say the least. Staying in the Medina means roughing it, so if you're young and single, or a young couple with no children, maybe you can hack it.
For food, I highly recommend Jawhara Cafe next to the American Language Centre (Rue Ahmed Hiba) for breakfast (great harsha, malawi, coffee, tea etc.) and Restaurant Florence on Rue Hassan II for lunch or dinner; they make amazing couscous, tagine, and every great Moroccan dish at great prices.

What an amazing city - filled all the senses .. such warm hospitality, amazing food and history abounds - the artisans and craftsmanship of the local people was astounding - I loved every minute during my stay from the getting lost in the Medina's alley's to exploring the historic city - My tour guide Hassan was magnificent - so spoiled by all his knowledge and ability to read his customers.... We so enjoyed all his recommendations and more importantly - all the knowledge he shared with us - Please make sure you allocate enough time in this beautiful city and enjoy the hidden Roads and their restaurants! The food and spices are simply amazing!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time.
just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you
Dar Lantana was exceptional--Catherine, the host, has amazing communication and is so helpful. Her staff is also so warm - Alal was helpful when she was not around and the cook can work some serious magic. We were in Morocco on a 10-day trip and the breakfast at Dar Lantana was the best one, hands down, out of all the places we have eaten (cafes, restaurants and other riads). The location is perfect for exploring the Fes medina. If you have any questions, Catherine can answer them and her recommendations are spot on.
Fantastic Riad and the best we've stayed in in all of Morocco (including a different Riad in Fes, which is curiously higher rated and more expensive on this website).
Impeccable and very spacious rooms (including the highest ceilings you'll ever see in a room) that make you feel like you're in an ancient palace - which you are.
Outstanding breakfast and service, including perfectly brewed coffee and fresh pressed orange juice.
Great location in the middle of the medina but easy to reach from the parking lot.
The location is extremely central to the Medina- 5 minutes from Chouara Tannery. It was extremely easy to check in and check out, and the host is very responsive and friendly; he ensured he was right on time for our check-in and let us check out early. He also made us a lovely cup of tea and offered restaurant suggestions before showing us our room. Breakfast is lovely Moroccan breads and tasty coffee. The rooftop terrace has beyond beautiful views. Overall, one of the best experiences we had in Fes.
It's a nice hotel, with a pool, several outside areas, a restaurant, café and bar in an area with loads of cafés and restaurants. The location is not very central, but if you use petite taxi you can get to the city center for around 11-13 dirham. Don't fall for the taxi drivers that linger around outside the hotel. Locals probably know. On the opposite site of the street, there is at least one simple, good, local, and cheap restaurant to have coffee, breakfast, and even lunch/dinner.
Can't say enough positive things about Chahd Palace. The location was a perfect combination of easy access to taxis and to the old medina. Best of all though was our host, Moufid. He was kind, patient, and generous with us - giving us insider info that helped us tremendously with the rest of our trip through Morocco. Can not thank Moufid enough! The accommodations were extremely comfortable and would certainly recommend staying at Chahd Palace during your trip to Fes!
If you are looking for an accomodation in Fes I can highly recommend this one. Trust me, you will not regret it! This Riad has THE BEST host you will ever find in Morocco. He was beyond helpful and friendly and made our stay even better and unforgettable.
On top of that, the Riad was stunning, clean and the breakfast was amazing. The location is just perfect as everything important is nearby such as the Medina.
Said it was perfect host, he recommend us place to visit and put in on Google maps, make a survey that we must to go, so we don't need a guide. Recommended us best restaurant that we eat in Maroc. Riad are very beautiful and have everything you need. Breakfast very tasty and we heard birds that are sing, it was like in heaven. Parking is near Riad, Medina 5 minutes walking. Perfect location to visit Fes.
We stayed in many Riads in our trip in Morocco, but Riad Farah stands out for 3 main factors: the breakfast, which is delicious; the localization, very close to the Blue Gate and perfect to explore the Medina of Fes; and the staff, specially Ahmed, who helped and guided us during our stay with information about the city, tours and much more.
I would definitely come back to Riad Farah!
Staff were great, especially Adi at reception, he organised a tourguide for the medina at short notice. It was an unforgettable experience, Mohammed our guide was so knowledgable and showed us a side to Fes we wouldn't have been able to on our own. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to enjoy the hammam, but it looked beautiful. A true reflection of Morocco! Thank you!
Batoul and the whole staff was incredibly kind and welcoming. The property is beautiful and the staff went above and beyond in making us feel comfortable. The tour of the Medina that they offered was SUCH a highlight and the perfect way to start our stay. Out of all of the riads we stayed at in Morocco, this was by far the best!!
Everything was perfect at Riad Laaroussa. This is the best riad we visited in Fes, even after visiting some other "fancier" options around. Hands down our favorite riad in Morocco after traveling for one month in the country. Staff was very nice, making us feel at home after returning from the medina and day-trips.
The best thing about this property was the team. From the moment you walk in until you are saying your goodbyes, they made us feel like Fez was our home. Don’t book anywhere else in Fez! The cooking class is a must do. And the roof top spaces give you a beautiful view of the Medina.
Three week in Morocco, and Riad Hayat Fez was our best stay yet. Set in a most beautifully appointed and spacious riad, the hotel is run very professionally, and with great attention to detail. Nothing is too much for the wonderful staff. Great brekky too!
Great Dar (traditional Hotel), quiet with just 2 minutes walk from the Old Fés Medina. Service was impeccable. Special shout out for Karim and his brother for their kind help and exchanges! If I go back to Fez, I will see I out Dar Victoria.
Exceptional riad in Fes with the best staff - they were really really helpful! The room was nice, the riad is beautiful and the location is just perfect for a short stay in Fes (approachable by car but on the edge of medina). Splendid!
OMG! It's by far, my best hotel experience! Othman (the manager) is the most professional person ever! I never had such hospitality like that in my entire life!
This guy make everything you ask possible!
THIS HOTEL DOES NOT EXIST. THE OWNER IS A COWARD, I SPOKEN TO HIM ON THE PHONE, A THIEF OF THE WORST KIND. NOW THERE IS A SIGN FOR A NEW HOTEL (RIAD FES TALAA) ON THE SITE. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM.
A great place to stay in Fes Medina. The hosts are very welcoming, helping with every detail of your stay. Food and sightseeing recommendations were great. The decoration of the hotel is superb.
The hotel is perfectly located for exploring the medina and all parts of Fez. It is superbly managed by Samira and team who are very professional and friendly.
