Polhena beach is an excellent place to have a safe swim for a traveller and can see turtles in the sea if you are lucky enough. And can visit Matara light house and Kudawalla water air hole by travelling a bit from Matara which has another nice beach.

Polhena is a nice village, Matara is a nice city with friendly people. There is lots to do in this area.
For example guided snorkling at Polhena Beach where you can really swim with the turtles, a boattrip on the Nilwala Ganga where you can see crocodiles.
Or visit the Starfort.
A great restaurant in Matara city is Dutchmanstreet restaurant. In Polhena i recommend eating at Sunil Rest, Blue Corals or Reef Edge restaurant.
Walking around at night in Polhena... take a stick and flash light with you, the street dogs just had puppys (cute) but their mother instinct gave me the creeps.

Matara is great transport hub, has fast bus connection with Colombo (via expressway). Also most buses on south pass through Matara. Though it's not a good place to stay longer - crowds, no good beaches, high prices.

But it was nice still. Thank you Matara. I love to live in Matara for real. Its so chill out places out there in all of the island . ❤🧡😊

We stayed at Turtle Eco Beach Hotel.
We stayed at Turtle Eco Beach Hotel. Olympic or near Olympic length pool, but only two lanes wide. Quite unique. The owners are French as are many of the guests. But so many languages can be heard there. Very family friendly!
We traveled back and forth to Polhena Beach (about 1.5 km to the south) for snorkeling daily. (Between 08:00 AM and noon, the water is the clearest.) Sadly, during our stay, the daily low tides coincided with - roughly - that same span of time, so we had to be extra careful to avoid getting scratched up by the coral reef.
Our stay was for three days from 15-18 January. We saw sea turtles every day and could even feed them "sea grass" by hand.
We ate near the hotel or near Polhena Beach and avoided going into town...
Huge family room with a large king bed and two singles, plus a balcony. Excellent air conditioning and fans, plus mosquito nets. Lovely pool and the bar and restaurant overlooking the sea was fantastic. Great food, fantastic views - we saw sea turtles from the bar area and got to swim with the turtles in nearby Polhena beach (although I think you could snorkel just next to the hotel and they were able to lend us snorkels). There are other restaurants nearby too within walking distance. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Lovely gift shop too!
Very clean and pretty new building and rooms (building in progress, but various rooms on the first floor are available and ready) beach view from your (spacious) balcony. Kitchen-like arrangement next to rooms. Large bathroom (new). No hot shower, but hey, who needs one here? 😊😊
Beach without the usual crowdedness. We were all alone during our stay. Nice waves nice view of Matara small island with Buddhist tempel.

Exceptional service! The staff was so nice and willing. Always helping and smiling. Rooms were great with balcony overlooking the surf. Nice breeze all day. We were on a surf trip, there is a nice break right in front of the place. The hotel is first line to the beach. Nice garden and pool. The location is Mostly good for surfing, not very lively around there, at least at the end of March. Very much recommended hotel
Stayed at Orange House for 2 weeks and had a great experience! The family who runs this guesthouse is incredibly friendly and very helpful. They cooked an amazing dinner for myself and 3 other guests! The location is very close to the main surfbreaks on weligama beach and shops, restaurants, atms. Would definitely stay here again!

Probably the best host we had in Sri Lanka! He was extremely helpful and nice. Rooms were more than beautiful and clean and had everything you might need. We had such a pleasant stay here. It definitely exceeded our expectations.
The location was excellent for people wanting to spend a lot of time on Hiriketiya Beach. The family was SO lovely and kind. They even have a really sweet dog there. I really enjoyed them and their kindness.
The family running this hostel was one of the nicest I've ever encountered. They even welcomed me with a refreshing coconut juice upon my arrival! I truly hope this small hotel thrives in the future.
