UNZEN HANZUIRYO by Onko Chishin, hotel in Unzen

Set 48 km from Nagasaki Museum of History, UNZEN HANZUIRYO by Onko Chishin offers 4-star accommodation in Unzen and has an open-air bath, a garden and a shared lounge.

This hotel has just 14 massive and expansive rooms - frankly more like an apartment on two levels. The setting is peaceful and the staff just ever presently helpful without being intrusive. The Assistant General Manager, Amila, helped enormously with advice and translation as most of the staff speak only Japanese. The public spa was in fact restricted to hotel guests so not really very public. Exceptionally well set up. Dinner in room was great and the Japanese breakfast was super comprehensive - served in my downstairs dining area by my room attendant.

TSUDOI guest house, hotel in Unzen

Situated within 47 km of Nagasaki Museum of History and 48 km of Nagasaki Station, TSUDOI guest house features rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Unzen.

The host was friendly and spoke good English, so communication was easy. He gave great recommendations for local food and activities. I followed his advice for a simple hike to a nearby pond and mountain, which was totally worth it for the beautiful scenery. The room was small but had everything I needed: a bed, two toilets, and a shower. There’s a common area on the first floor, and note that the shower is only available until 11pm. I also received a free coupon for the nearby public bath. Though it’s small and old, with only one onsen pool that’s quite hot, it’s still worth trying.

Iseya, Seaview Private Onsen Bath, hotel in Unzen

Ideally set in the Obama Onsen district of Unzen, Iseya, Seaview Private Onsen Bath is situated 44 km from Nagasaki Museum of History, 45 km from Nagasaki Station and 50 km from Peace Park.

Lovely property. Friendly and helpful staff. In room onsen was a nice touch. Room was very spacious. Everything is as per the photos posted, no surprises - in a good way. There’s really nothing much to do in the area or vicinity so it’s perfect if you are looking to rest and relax, but not if you are looking to do stuff.

A lovely experience in Unzen. Hotel is a nice mix of traditional ryokan and western hotel. The best of both worlds! Onsen is beautiful. The food was plentiful and very nice, in a traditional style. The staff made a great effort to communicate with us in English, which was appreciated.

Staff were so friendly and helpful, really helped make the stay special. Lady who waited at table for dinner was delightful and taught the proper way to eat the keiseki meal, which was the best we've enjoyed in Japan. Guy at front desk even came out to help load our luggage onto bus. Room was spacious and well equipped. Free juke box in the cafe!

Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December.

Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December. Not so pleasant if it rains. Hiking nearer the ridge may not be suitable to those who are not so fit as it can get quite steep. Using the ropeway could ease the trip a bit for those who have some health challenges.

Very good, affordable option in Unzen. The facilities are very clean, the room is traditional with futon and yukata, and the bath is nice. The pension does not have outdoor bath but there are many public baths just a few minutes away. The host is a very welcoming old lady, she prepares nice typical Japanese breakfast. Thank you! 😊🙏

Perfect location to explore Unzen/Shimabara. The owner and staffs are extremely friendly and helpful, told us their favourite onsen spots/restaurants/activities etc. We enjoyed chatting a lot :) Our Japanese Tatami room was spacious and spotless clean. Nice view from the window! We would definitely come back again.

Gorgeous views of Oshidorino Pond from the room. I stayed in the room at the end. Room was enormous - two beds a Desk and plenty of space for luggage. The room also had a separate sitting area (I didn’t use it) bathroom and toilet in their own rooms as well. Room had all I needed for a basic stay in Unzen

The location is superb - watching the sun set from our room was spectacular. The room was vast by Japanese standards. The hotel is quite dated but in a charming way.
