Awesome location and staff. I requested for the hotel to prepare a slice of cake as it was my mother-in-law's birthday. But they served us a whole cake and even sang and clapped along the Birthday Song during dinner.
Dinner was pork shabu shabu. The quality of food was impeccable. Breakfast was simple and delicious.

Was our first time staying at a traditional 2-storey japanese house, did take some getting used to, otherwise an interesting experience! Futons were tucked in the cupboard and was comfy once laid out. House was spacious with old school finishings, however toilet was surprisingly newly constructed (it seems).
Boasting a balcony with mountain views, a garden and barbecue facilities, Kashi Besso Takachiho can be found in Takachiho, close to Takachiho Shrine and a 11-minute walk from Takachiho Gorge...

I appreciated the staff offering me help. They kept my luggage before and after my time, so I could explore the town well. I arrived by bus + foot, and they gave me a ride to the bus station on my return. They dressed me in Yukata(summer kimono) and were ready to chauffeur me to an outdoor evening show, but I declined and enjoyed my bath in my backyard.
Whereas usual Ryokan serves food in your room, this place has two food serving areas, and they walked me to different rooms for dinner and breakfast. I liked the nice garden views from two different locations.

The hotel is old and very basic. Nothing fancy. Just needed a place to spend the night and move out the next morning.

The place is unique. We park just outside our cabin, making loading and unloading very easy. It has 2 rooms with 2 double decker beds for our family of 5 which was more than sufficient. Each comes with its own toilet and bathroom. The 2 rooms are connected by a space which has a sitting area and kitchen. It would have been better if it has a washing machine and TV.
Located in Gokase and only 48 km from Mount Aso, Gokase Campsite Camping and Guesthouse provides accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking.

Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto...
Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto Airport and is easy to reach in a rental car. The scenery en route is amazing! The Gorge is stunning but not very long. The rowing boat trip is relatively expensive, ¥5100 for 30 minutes for a max of 3 people, but it is great fun with wonderful photo opportunities! You can walk some of the way along the river but part of the path is still damaged. There are several nice shrines in the area, one of which does nightly Kagura dance performances (1 hour for ¥1000). We stayed 2 nights in a lovely Ryokan at the end of our holiday and it was a great way to finiour trip to Japan.

Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place!
Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place! The gorge was one of the most incredible places I have ever been in my life and I will definitely be returning one day with my family. I cannot recommend this place enough.
The locals were so friendly! Literally everyone I spoke to was so kind and helpful, when I panicked and got myself lost they were so wonderful. Even kids walking home from school said hi as they passed me!
The only catch is that if you’re flying into Kumamoto Airport, there is only one bus that will take you to Takachiho and it’s over two hours to travel and only comes twice a day. You have to be very organised because if you miss that bus, it’s not easy to get there if you aren’t renting a car.
While you’re in the area, you should also check out Iwato Shrine and the Amaterasu Railway. The railway is a great way to get a better view of the valley from above -so long as you have a head for heights!
Overall, I would say seeing Takachiho is a must if you’re visiting Japan!

Ryokan Shinsen was absolutely AMAZING!
Ryokan Shinsen was absolutely AMAZING! Everything from communication before through our stay was exceptional. The food was the best we have had in Japan (we have lived here 2 and a half years). The service was top notch and the private onsen was wonderful. Highly recommend.

Highly recommending the nature trail walk from Manai falls...
Highly recommending the nature trail walk from Manai falls to Takachiho Shrine. It offers better view than boating ard the waterfall. If time allows, do go to Amanoiwato Shrine - the view at Amano Yasukawara is awesome. If you eat beef, lunch at Nagomi is one of the best option!

A small town, but filled with culture and beautiful nature.
A small town, but filled with culture and beautiful nature. I really enjoyed the shrine and getting some omamori as gifts. The gorge was beautiful, but unfortunately the water was a little muddy when we went, and we couldn't ride the row boats due to high tide. Despite this, it was a great stay and I would want to come back to see it during Autumn season as I heard its really beautiful.
Beautiful establishment. The staff were very kind. We arrived late to the hotel but they made sure we were on time for the theater performance down the road. Every detail about the hotel was perfect, from the moment you arrived to the departure. They did not offer a Western style breakfast, which was the only downside of our experience there. It has a very local vibe to it.
We had the unit with the private outdoor bath. The unit is very spacious and well equipped. Host was very helpful and friendly. Helped us with reservation for dinner. A quiet location not far from Takachiho gorge and very near Amanoiwato Shrine.
Great hotel. We had a beautiful, big room (for 3 people) with big comfortable beds. Good location and a parking lot.
Breakfast had a big choice of different things.
