This place is a hidden gem surrounded by gorgeous nature. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, staff are kind and breakfast exceptional. The female onsen was completely empty when we visited. The male onsen was frequented by local residents giving it an authentic feel.

Comfortable enough but a bit scarce with cooking facilities - only a microwave and a very small amount of bench space. Clean and comfortable beds but no sheet for the bed our friend needed to make up so she had to sleep on the mattress protector. Lovely view out the back.

This was such a pleasant wee surprise! It was immaculately clean and in a lovely setting. The highlight was how incredible the staff were, though. Everyone was so sweet and kind, it really made for a gorgeous stay.

Suhara (Okuwa) is a lovely small town on the Nakasendo on the Kiso river. It's in Nagano prefecture. There are some lovely houses. Trains are reliable but infrequent so plan carefully if travelling by train. Make sure you don't go to the town of the same name, on the same river, in Gifu prefecture as we did. Super place if you love peace, quiet and walking / hiking
