Great to stay in an authentic “Edo period’ house in a smaller town off the tourist track. Glad downstairs room was air conditioned - otherwise would have been an uncomfortable stay. Bathroom, toilet and laundry facilities great.

I reckon this might be the best hostel in the world. Fantastic helpful staff. I lost our passports, rail passes and money and the hostel guy rang around everywhere we had been and found them and drove me half an hour away and back to pick them up! Amazing. The facilities are lovely, well set up kitchen and so clean. The beds are super comfortable and have a power point and locker in the cubicle. A short walk to town.

A traditional Japanese Ryokan/onsen, located in the picturesque mountains of Kiso Valley, Perfect location for walking the Nakasendo Trail. Hosts only let the property out to 1 booking at a time so you have sole use of everything. External and internal onsens that you have the use of, anytime during your stay. The Outdoor onsen overlooks mountains and waterfalls.
Food: exceptional, with the hosts preparing everything fresh. The service and food was outstanding.
Hosts; phenomenal, warm, welcoming, supportive of local information and places to visit. Happy to transport you to and from the station. Toike also took us and picked us up from the Nakasendo trail and was happy to show us point of interest. Would highly recommend you to stay in this property to experience the true traditional Japanese accommodation.
Cannot recommend this accommodation highly enough and would not hesitate to stay here again. We hope to return.

A bit of a splurge after hiking the Nakascendo Trail, great value as it includes just about everything. Delicious buffet dinner and breakfast, so much choice. It’s fairly remote and we were the only westerners staying there. Free shuttle bus to station also.

Suhara (Okuwa) is a lovely small town on the Nakasendo on the Kiso river. It's in Nagano prefecture. There are some lovely houses. Trains are reliable but infrequent so plan carefully if travelling by train. Make sure you don't go to the town of the same name, on the same river, in Gifu prefecture as we did. Super place if you love peace, quiet and walking / hiking
