Matsue is a beautiful smaller town with an amazing castle and grounds, samurai houses and lovely streets to wander around. We did an afternoon train trip to a stunning temple in Izumo and also to a nearby onsen town. Matsue is a gem as it has so many wonderful sites to visit without the crowds of Kyoto. We will definitely be going back.

Our stay was brief - only two full days - but in addition to its castle and historic district made for walking, Matsue is a good jumping off point for day trips to Izumo Taisha shrine, the Adachi Art Museum and the garden at Yushien. One evening we had an enjoyable meal at a local "okonomiyaki" restaurant on the quiet street behind the hotel. The 88-year old proprietress was energetic, fun to speak with, and recommended a very tasty locally-brewed sake.

Matsue Castle and the surrounding castle complex are incredible. It’s a far more authentic experience of feudal era Japanese castles than the remodeled, refurbished, and in many ways entirely rebuilt castles of Osaka, Nagoya, and Hiroshima, to name a few.

It's a wonderful and charming city! The art museums, castle/historical sites, and natural scenery are great. We had a lovely time just walking around the side streets and along the river. A hidden gem of Japan for sure!

Matsue castle is the best to recommend to you, to see from the outside and inside of old wooden architecture. I also recommend to visit an old great Izumo-taisha shrine by train from Matsue to Isumo-shi and bus from that station.

Guest house Yonemuraya was a pleasant surprise. It was so much better than staying at a hotel, as it felt like a more authentic Japanese experience. I travelled to Matsue for a conference at Kunibike Messe convention centre and this was only a short walk away. Emi-San was an excellent host, helping me with finding place for dinner, sightseeing and shopping ideas when I had time off work. There was a lively restaurant area nearby, and the train station, castle etc were within walking distance.

Stunning, authentic and clean room(s), kind and understanding staff who spoke to me slowly in Japanese to assist with checkin, and rules were reiterated in English on documents anyway despite Matsue being relatively rural. Absolutely beautiful view at both night and in the morning, I was shocked! Onsen came free with the stay. Zero complaints, the best stay of our trip around Japan.

Top to bottom, I’m traveling 16 days, so far best ever. Old style Japanese Life music to so many choice , fancy dinner, great Onsen to its view. But one day to make other day to female , you can have even you stay a day, either morning or night It worth it every penny. Stay there two days. I did one but already scheduled other town, if you do , please try two days

Clean hotel with traditional feel to it (tatami mats, samues). Very friendly staff (bit tricky with English but they had some translation app on little handheld devices). Lovely large onsen on the rooftop with views over matsue and lake shinji. Lovely large breakfast buffet. Absolutely loved the free massage chairs.

Everyone at the hotel was lovely and looked after us very well. Lots of seafood for dinner and also breakfast, and both were generous. Our room had a sitting area and a great view of the harbour. In addition to our private bathroom, there was an onset style bath, which you can use privately with your partner.

Highly recommended guest house. It’s valuable for solo traveler to stay and enjoy the Japanese onsen culture The staff is super nice. They will notice my note and pick up from the JR station. I have lost my watch in the hotel and then the staff help me to deliver it . I really appreciate the help from them.

Standard big station hotel with the ever polite Japanese staff. Small onsens on the ground floor. Although in the back of the building it is a bit awkward to have them there. Breakfast was okay. Nothing great, but nothing wrong. If you want to stay near the station it's a good place.
