The staff were all helpful and polite. They went out of their way to make our stay really special. I asked at short notice if a small celebration cake could be added to the evening meal for my partner's birthday. It was too late to prepare that, but still they presented her with a small gift at the end of the meal, beautifully wrapped, which was so unexpected! The Japanese breakfasts were delicious and each ingredient was introduced and explained. The evening meal was wonderful, one of the best meals this month in Japan. The room with western beds and a japanese room was very comfy and clean and the onsen was perfect for a small hotel. Overall the hotel was so relaxing and we felt welcome, even though we only spoke a little Japanese. The beach in front was idyllic and the ceramic shops were great, having a chance to meet the ceramicists . The best hotel vidit so far! Thank you!

古民家1棟貸し 今魚店の家, hotel in Hagi

Offering a garden and inner courtyard view, 古民家1棟貸し 今魚店の家 is located in Hagi, 2.5 km from Shokasonjuku Academy and 2.5 km from Shoin Shrine.

We loved the house, the location, and the town! As photos show, this is a very traditional, lovely Japanese house, fully renovated with understated elegance, with 2 large tatami rooms, and western comfort in the master bedroom (two very comfy beds, armchairs and table) and bathroom (with ensuite shower); it has a charming front garden, and an orchard of the famous Hagi natsumikan at the back. The location is ideal, in what probably was temple grounds, 3 mn walk to a local supermarket, 5 mn from the spectacular beach, 10 mn from the merchants' quarter, 30 mn to samurai quarter. There is easy parking space for 1 (or 2 small cars). You'll see the iconic old wall with tiles every time you leave the house. Communication with the owner was fine, though he or she wrote in Japanese (easily translates with Google trad). The young lady who welcomed us spoke good English and could point out surrounding restaurants ; the house mainly caters for Japanese speaking guests, but they also have prepared recommandations in English. Hagi is a fabulous destination ; there is so much to see in and around the city, worth staying 2 or 3 days! We'd love to be back.

Aki and his partner are lovely young people who are very kind and friendly. They have remodelled this older house themselves. The views are amazing and it is in a lovely, quiet old fishing neighbourhood. All the basics are provided there. It is a really interesting place to stay.

Self contained house opposite the river which was a plus. Good laundry area too. Old style house. Traditional sleeping too on futons. It is a 25 minute walk into the Old Castle Town area which was very interesting. Local ramen shop near to Old Castle Town was welcomed.

I absolutely loved Hagi, we stayed for 3 nights and plan to return and stay again sometime in the future. The city art museum is impressive, the old merchant houses are interesting, the beach is absolutely stunning and the pottery was too tempting as I bought 4 pieces. I'd recommend visiting the atmospheric temples - Tokoji and Daishoin. Definitely stop by Meirinkan - this combines an interesting museum with tourist information, cafe, restaurant and shop selling a good selection of items. Sadly we didn't have time to visit the temple ruins or Mount Kasayama.

Hagi was home to several prominent and important figures in Japanese history. It was the hot bed of ideas starting with Yoshida Shoin whose free schools encouraged pride in being Japanese and also in having aspirations/dreams. The Hagi 5 brought back ideas from England that helped launch Japan's rapid industrialization. It was the crossroads for Satsuma's Saigo Takamori, Tosa's Ryoma Sakamoto and Hagi's Shoin Yoshida to formulate a united plan to bring down the Tokugawa Shogunate. This area should have been declared a World Heritage Side. Maybe it would be if more information was provided in English for non-Japanese visitors.

    Such a pleasant surprise!

Such a pleasant surprise! I was visiting as part of a longer research trip, so I only had two nights in town, but I wish I could have extended my stay to see more sites. The locals were incredibly welcoming and warm, and there is more than enough to see for a long weekend stay.
