Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodation includes hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.
There isn’t anything really wrong with Trieste, it just...
There isn’t anything really wrong with Trieste, it just wasn’t our favorite city. It’s very much uphill for anything you want to see so it’s not good for elderly or people who can’t get around well. I was expecting it to be a little bit more “Jewel of the Adriatic.” Because of the High Points, The view was nice and we spent most of our time looking out at the tops of the buildings.

Very delightful city with plenty of good venues to see.
Very delightful city with plenty of good venues to see. Really enjoyed the Van Gogh exhibit at the museum. Also enjoyed the fort at the top of the town. Really nice restaurants around the canal serving fresh fish and local fare. Surprisingly nice port for larger ships as a replacement for Venice. Spent 3 days there and enjoyed each day with something different to do each day.

Great city to visit!
Great city to visit!
Due to its geographical location, it is relatively close to Ljubljana in Slovenia, Udine, Venice etc. etc.
I could visit Ljubljana and Venice as well this time from Trieste.
Its old town, harbour, main square (Piazza Unità d'Italia) is amazing. Loved just rambling around in the city.
Since it is build on a hill(mountain)side (the Karst), when entering the city by bus, we were descending in some serpentine roads. It provided an amazing view on the city and the harbour.
You could also read the book 'Trieste and the meaning of nowhere' by Jan Morris.
Also, James Joyce seems to have liked the city, too.
Trieste has a very interesting and rich history.

Trieste is an amazing place Italian and yet not.
Trieste is an amazing place Italian and yet not. A mix of cultures. Lovely to walk about and enjoy the city. Visit old cafes where James Joyce and his literary friends gathered. So much history. The food is delicious and some of the best white wines to be had anywhere in the world. I could go on but I’ll end by saying Trieste is not to be missed .

Trieste is a very compact city.
Trieste is a very compact city. The main square and restaurants are all close together. There is a wide variety of eating places that all seemed to be reasonably priced.
The harbour side sea font is pretty and it is well worth taking a ferry trip to Muggia (30 minutes)
Mirimar Castle is also well worth a trip 25 minutes on the NO.6 bus from outside the train station.
The location is fabulous. Older hotel that is truly historic Italy. Views from the rooms are breath taking. Two restaurants by the water. We liked the one not on the corner but next to it. Breakfast was great and the staff was excellent. The bus right out front will take you to Trieste in minutes. The bad reviews you read are people looking for the Hilton. This is not the Hilton it is historic and we loved it. Short walk to the castle other tourist have to book an expensive tour to see.
Location was amazing, it’s very central. The apartment is also very clean and space is great for solo traveler like me. The bed was also comfy and the bathroom is super clean. Room looks like new and it is exactly what photos represent. The wifi was super duper fast as well. Temperature can easily regulated for your comfort. It’s an amazing value and would definitely book this again if I visit Trieste.
The hotel is very cozy, and the location is great - 10min walk from Unity Square, and within minutes of all the cute streets you’ll want to see.
The staff is very welcoming and kind. A welcome drink upon check in is a nice touch.
The room is nice and cozy. It has everything you need, and everything felt well. This is a boutique hotel and it definitely has a style to it.
Loved the beautiful stone walls in our suite, with very high ceilings and extremely comfortable bed and couch. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful. Location was perfect, approximately a 10 minute scenic walk to the cruise terminal and 5 minutes to the Trieste main square! We liked it so much we are returning to Hotel Solun after our cruise!
Location is great. I loved that it’s located in the non touristy part of Trieste so you feel like in Italy! Maja was a great host and communication was excellent! Flat has that lovely feeling of old and new, reminded me on my Nona’s kitchen! Loved the little touches around the place and toys left on the bed for my daughter
Stayed here for one night pre cruise. Travelled from Venice to Trieste by train. Did not have a reception but staff sent very clear emails and WhatsApp messages regarding room and keypad. Was extremely clean, nice room. Location was amazing, would definitely return to Trieste & use Elizabeth Boutique rooms again.
You can call it a luxury apartment. everything clean and comfortable. With private garage and very safe to park. We have not met the host in person, but he is very communicative on whatsapp and the instructions for the keys and parking are very clear.
Perfect location in the heart of Trieste
This hotel is centred in the middle of Trieste - it is very well kept, clean rooms and bathrooms - breakfast excellent - considering the price paid for a family of four it was excellent. Yes, we shall return to this hotel and we highly recommend it to future visitors
We have mixed feelings about this hotel. Staff was amazing -- so friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and appeared to have been updated fairly recently. Location was fantastic -- easy walking distance to restaurants and many sites in town.
Amazing boutique hotel with very helpful and friendly staff, spacious, quite rooms and a very good breakfast with a good selection of both sweet and savory option which is not so common in Italy.
Just around the corner from the center.
Beautifully designed modern contemporary hotel in a great location close to piazza dell’Unita and many other sites to see and places to eat and shop in Trieste. Wonderful friendly staff. Great breakfast op.
Novo Albergo Centro was the best hotel we stayed in during our week in Italy, along with Pensione Stork.
Albergo Centro's rooms and breakfast were wonderful. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Comfortable and well-furnished aparment in a good location close to the city center of Triest. Well equiped kitchen, two TVs, spacious bedroom, clean bathroom. The owner is very friendly.
Very nice boutique hotel in the city center. Highly recommended. Windows have a very good noise cancellation which is a strong plus when you get a room pointing towards the street.
