We (kids and parents) loved the Volcano Museum, a hike to the top of the volcanic cone (great pictures and some snowflakes!), a self-guided walking tour in the town (in Rick Steves' guidebook), eating at Gott and a kebab place in town, and driving out to see puffins (just beginning to arrive in early June). Beautiful flowers and such friendly people! Glad we brought our rental car over on the ferry to get us where we wanted to go easily.
I would have liked to stay another full day or two at least to experience the place and the people, see the puffin/whale rehabilitation facility and take a boat ride out to the uninhabited islands if that's possible.

Peaceful small town with rich and fascinating history, namely it's fishing industry and near annihilation by a volcano. I recommend hiking over and to the top of the volcano and visiting the volcano museum.

The ferry to get to the island was immaculately clean and ran on time both ways. While a smaller boat for such open seas, the sailing was still good and not too rough! The island itself was picturesque and I wish I could have stayed longer.

Such a beautiful island! The landscape is absolutely unreal.
Such a beautiful island! The landscape is absolutely unreal. Hiking the volcano and then visiting the museum is a must. We saw puffins on the outlook just past the golf course! (ie didn't need to take the bus tour to the southern tip of the island to see them). Vigtin bakery is delicious, as well as Tanginn for dinner. Check out Brothers Brewery for a good drink! Super easy to get around on foot, and the ferry was perfect! A must see in Iceland!

Vestmanneayar is a beautiful, self-contained fishing village...
Vestmanneayar is a beautiful, self-contained fishing village that also caters nicely to tourists. It is located on the island of Heimaey. Getting there is challenging but well worth it. The best way is to rent a car in Reykjavik and drive 2 hours to Landeyjahofn on the south coast. Leave the car there (I found no need for a car on the island) and take the ferry out to the island. Two or three days is sufficient to see everything on Heimaey. Bike rental, e-scooter and hiking are the best ways to get around. I was able to bike the length of the island with several stops in about 2 hours. It's hilly- what do you expect it's a volcano. Great opportunities to view wild life and spend time outside. The views cannot be beat. Food is excellent but (like the rest of Iceland) a bit expensive. The public pool/ hot tubs are a great way to end a physically taxing day.

What a beautiful island!
What a beautiful island! We took the tour with EyjaTours and it was so informative. The island holds so much rich history, and the scenery is gorgeous. We were able to see the puffins, as well as learn about volcanoes.
The place was very clean!
Mother and daughter working in the place are very nice (English not so great).
Reception is around back (it's the same Reception for the hotel with private rooms in that same building).
Pods are really cool if you haven't stayed in a capsule hostel before this is a fun experience.
Location is perfect, 5 min walk from ferry, supwrmarket is around the corner.
Pizza place next door is OK.
Nice location on the Westman Islands, only about a 10 minute walk from the ferry. Room was laid out well, and the cooking faciliites were great. Nice to have a full size fridge. Shower was good pressure and bathroom spacious. Enjoyed having a balcony door, mostly for air flow, as it gets warm in the summer with the long days of sun. Mostly quiet area and courteous staff.
I booked the hostel with mixed feelings because of the very different reviews. Looking back I need to say that I definitely do not share the bad ones. Instead I would say that the accommodation is a typical good hostel and as long as you do not expect hotel services you will be fine there.
The location was excellent, a short walk from Elephant Rock in one direction and downtown Vestmannaeyjabær in the other. The proprietor went out of his way to make us feel welcome- we enjoyed a nice breakfast before boarding the morning ferry back to the mainland.
We enjoyed our stay at Guesthouse Hamar in Vestmannaeyjar! The location is a very convenient 5 minute walk from the harbor. The town is small, so everything is within walking distance. The longest walk we took was our hike across the island to see the puffins.
The ferry was cancelled due to weather and we had to find a last minute spot. Although it was pricey, this place worked out. In town, just across the street from the grocery store. Beds were good, room had kettle and coffee/tea. Over all good for the situation.
The location is simply amazing, nobody should miss it when coming to Vestmannaeyjar. I booked the deluxe cabin, and it was excellent. The bathroom and kitchen are in the main building. Everything is very clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Excellent choice for affordable accommodation in the heart of Heimaey, right next to the ferry and a host of amenities, with easy access to the hills and coast. Extremely clean, very handy kitchen and useful Netflix access for rainy days too.
A kitchen provides all you need to cook your own meals. Well equipped. The beds were comfortable, and the views straight from the dining table were... wow... Even with terrible weather on Westman Islands, the views were epic.
The cabin was cute and comfortable. The location by the golf course and elephant rock was awesome. The showers and bathrooms were cleaner than a lot of hotels we've stayed in. It was wonderful.
This guesthouse matches easily up with Hotels like Kea, Icelandair, Foss. Great breakfast, swiftly replenished. Central location, close to restaurants, shops, harbor.
clean and convenient
the best towels I have ever used
kettle in the room
comfortable beds
location near the harbour and restaurants
check-in with the code
Nice location, very close to the ferry. The bed was nice and it was also very nice to be able to open the windows, which isn’t the case in many hotels.
