This was already our second time at Harper and it didn't disappoint. The rooms are modern and clean to international standards. The hotel isn't in the centre of Medan but there are many restaurants and coffee shops close by.

Staff are friendly and there recognise their repeat guest either there are from security, housekeeping,maintenance and f&b. I would gave my highly appreciation to f&b staff, Rangga. To be honest his not only friendly but doing his extra service and remember by hard the room number without saying it to him. He always smile and greet whenever i pass by.

The food in Medan is superb, although some rumah makan did not really practice hygiene. Generally, it was easy to find non-halal and halal restaurants. Jong Ah Fie Mansion is awesome. Im impressed that a lot of the things there are well preserved. Istana Maimoon is okay for buying handcrafts. The Graha Bunda Maria Annai Velangkanni church is very unique too. However, I must admit that Lake Toba is the main highlight of my visit there. The lake is super beautiful and I really enjoy my stay and time at Lake Toba - Samosir, Karo, Berastagi etc...will definitely recommend travellers who enjoy immersing themselves in peaceful nature to visit Lake Toba. :) Seriously, the sunrise and sunset are mind blowing.

Medan, indeed all of Sumatra is much cleaner than Java. A lot more pride taken civically. Most folk uses Medan as their entry point to Toba. I just wished I'd spent more time in Medan first. Lovely place.

There is a good number of attractions for a day tour of the city of Medan itself and I would recommend this.
Aside from this is it best to stay in the places you are visiting.
Unlike what the internet may suggest you definitely cannot do a day tour to Lake Toba from Medan in one day unless you want to spend anywhere from 10 to 17 hours in a car. I do not recommend... at all.
A sunrise hike of Mount Sibayak from Medan is doable but will be very tiring and I would recommend staying in Berastagi instead.

Medan is almost like kuala lumpur, a melting pot of many cultures and each of them are distinctively exist and thriving. You can find many kind of foods and cafe to fulfill your desire of culinary adventure
The hotel is a calm and quiet place in the city that is Medan. There's lots of things to see and do around the hotel, one street from the hotel is a night market with great food and cold beers (across the street enter a small alleyway). The center, malls, train station and Little India are not far away. Maybe a bit far if it's hot outside, but you can always get a taxi in front of the hotel or ask the helpful hotel staff.
Bua Guesthouse is a hidden gem just outside the main city of Medan. It is easy to get to and feels much safer in this area than Medan. The owner is wonderful - happy to help in any way she can. She will take you to the airport if you need and is happy to lend her scooter so you can run errands. Breakfast was fried rice and very filling. She also offers dinner for a cheap price.
Their executive room is the best value in Medan and beyond. Breakfast is very rich, they have a business center too, not sure why the hotel is only 3-star, maybe due to it's relatively small size or the immediate surroundings (location is centric but outside street is a bit dusty and hectic). But the experience is 5 star, at least when staying in an executive room.
I booked a family room with 4 single beds. The check in was smooth, all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was spacious and clean. We stayed here because the hotel location is near eateries & Indomaret in walking distance. There is also a shuttle bas to the airport.
Room was clean. Staff was friendly and willing to help. The amount of options in Medan seem limited, so this one felt like the best choice. They also have a restaurant, so you can get coffee and breakfast in the morning.
