FAQs about hotels in Newcastle upon Tyne

The Spirit of the North

A former Industrial Revolution hub, Newcastle has reinvented itself into a vibrant, forward-thinking city. Although no longer brewed here, Newcastle Brown Ale, or Newkie Brown, is synonymous with the city, so it’s no surprise that the nightlife is fantastic.

From the O2 Academy to the Sage Music Centre, the Newcastle music venues are among the best in England. The city also has a thriving arts scene, including The Biscuit Factory – Britain’s largest original art store.

Equally as good is the Newcastle shopping. The Central Arcade is in an attractive Victorian building, and across the River Tyne in Gateshead is the Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping and leisure complex. Indeed, these 2 cities have a healthy rivalry that plays out in sport, architecture and, sometimes, the bizarre.

Gateshead boasts the Angel of The North, a huge statue that is already its most recognised (and controversial) symbol. While in Newcastle the Vampire Rabbit sits above a door near St Nicholas’ Cathedral. Newcastle United Football Club has the most prestigious record, but Gateshead Stadium has seen many a star compete at its international athletics meets.

To the west of the city are some remains of Hadrian’s Wall and further north is Newcastle Airport. See Booking.com for a range of accommodation all over this happening city.

The Glasshouse is a superb venue for live music and arts. Great location and the sound quality is always superb. Great city views from the bars. Colonel Porters on Dean Street was a quirky bar for meeting up with friends prior to a nice xmas meal at Portofino which had a great atmosphere.

Lovely port city with a rich history. Really good selection of restaurants and bars. The shopping was good too. The city has amazing bridges, and is just a few metro stops away from the stunning North Sea coast. Favorite place I visited: St James Park stadium and The Baltic Art Gallery Favorite Place to eat: Doja Japanese Restaurant in Chinatown It is very easy to get around the city. It's very walkable, and also has a frequent Metro network and Taxis. Quayside bars and a trip to Whitby bar are lovely couples activities.

A very busy and vibrant city, you need to be fit as the streets are very steep specially walking up from the Tyne to Eldon Square or St. James' Park. The city is always busy but especially so on match days. The pubs are vibrant and the locals are very hospitable even to us southerners. There are plenty of restaurants and a wide variety of foods to choose from. If you like Chinese Food the Chinese Quarter is for you! If you are coming to a Newcastle match, the club shop is open until late and well worth a visit as to is the Stack, a great venue before and after the match, arrive early to avoid the queues. plenty of street food on sale, beer and live music. There is unfortunately lots of homeless people on the streets asking for money which seems to be common in all our cities and I am sure the city is trying to help as much as it can.

We ate in China Town on this occasion at King Neptune, great food and excellent service. We walked most places but just as easy to get a taxi or use the local bus service.

The location was great, city centre only a short walk away. The staff were so friendly and extremely helpful. The car park was only around the corner so we didn’t have to carry our bags far.
