Royal Station Hotel- Part of the Cairn Collection, hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne

Enjoy everything Newcastle has to offer from this classic hotel in the city centre.

Absolutely great location, perfect for when you’ve got loads of luggage, just got off the train and want to quickly check in and lie down! Gorgeous room, such a comfy bed. Really nice bathroom too! Everything was so clean and everything worked perfectly. Love the complimentary coffee, milk and biscuits. Really great bonus is the added gym facilities on site, we checked out left our luggage with reception and went to the gym in the morning to cure our hangover in the cold plunge and sauna, such a treat! Lovely restaurant/bar downstairs too. Highly recommend and all the staff were so lovely. Perfect stay in Newcastle!

FAQs about hotels in Newcastle upon Tyne

The Spirit of the North

A former Industrial Revolution hub, Newcastle has reinvented itself into a vibrant, forward-thinking city. Although no longer brewed here, Newcastle Brown Ale, or Newkie Brown, is synonymous with the city, so it’s no surprise that the nightlife is fantastic.

From the O2 Academy to the Sage Music Centre, the Newcastle music venues are among the best in England. The city also has a thriving arts scene, including The Biscuit Factory – Britain’s largest original art store.

Equally as good is the Newcastle shopping. The Central Arcade is in an attractive Victorian building, and across the River Tyne in Gateshead is the Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping and leisure complex. Indeed, these 2 cities have a healthy rivalry that plays out in sport, architecture and, sometimes, the bizarre.

Gateshead boasts the Angel of The North, a huge statue that is already its most recognised (and controversial) symbol. While in Newcastle the Vampire Rabbit sits above a door near St Nicholas’ Cathedral. Newcastle United Football Club has the most prestigious record, but Gateshead Stadium has seen many a star compete at its international athletics meets.

To the west of the city are some remains of Hadrian’s Wall and further north is Newcastle Airport. See Booking.com for a range of accommodation all over this happening city.

Newcastle has so much to offer!

Newcastle has so much to offer! The main city centre has great shops and restaurants - Grainger Market is amazing for food, drink, vintage clothes and more. I would recommend getting the Metro to Whitley Bay, and then walking (about an hour or less depending on the route), to Tynemouth! Riley’s Fish Shack on Tynemouth Beach is an absolute MUST visit - it’s quirky and has the best chilli fish empanada you will ever eat. I would also recommend going to Jesmond - Burds is a lovely spot for breakfast/brunch & coffee, Fern Avenue Antiques is a fantastic space, and you must go to Wylam Brewery - it’s situated by a stunning lake in a lovely park, and brews amazing beer. The staff there are lovely too! You can walk to lots of places, but there are also some brilliant bus routes and the Metro is so easy to use as well.

Amazing city with very friendly people.

Amazing city with very friendly people. There is so much to do and getting around is easy with the train and Metro. Felt very safe walking about at night. Slug and Lettuce on Grainger street is great for pub food, and Kaspas diner does amazing desserts, well worth a visit. Access to the Metro shopping centre is easily accessed by train from the city centre, the journey takes about 10 mins.

Whenever I head home to Newcastle I always check to see if this hotel is available for my dates and if it is, I book it. I now also do the same for any other cities I travel too. The location is perfect being right in the city centre and a 5min walk from the rail station. Everything you could need is right on your doorstep. The rooms are always extremely clean, staff friendly and the bed is so comfy I don't want to leave it!

My 3rd stay at the Cairn in the last year.As it was a Sunday hotel wasn't too busy and it was a relaxing overnight stay after celebrating Newcastle United win v Wolves. Location is great with plenty of bars and restaurants in the area and car parking on site. The metro station is only a 5 minute walk and if a pleasant day it is only a 15/20 minute walk to city centre.
