Llangain is ideal to combine a tranquil retreat with a centre for exploring a wide scenic area stretching from Kidwelly to Tenby and beyond, and also to visit the upper Towy valley perhaps as far as the Llyn Brianne reservoir. Everywhere there are interesting castles - if you have time do not miss my favourite castle at Manorbier, and Laugharne where Dylan Thomas lived (when he wasn't drinking at my Nana's pub in Swansea). Carmarthen has an excellent market - you should be able to get laverbread (baralawr) - it might look like fresh cowpat but it's lovely - ask how to cook it - local recipes vary. Bara brith is everywhere, just like my Nana made. And if you get the chance to go to a real Welsh folk experience - a 'gymanfa ganu' - a sort of chapel sing-in - then you must go.
